Unique experience staying in a castle

Posted Oct. 26, 2017 on Expedia
My partner and I loved this place and would definitely return. We stayed in Tower 2 and had unbelievable views of the surrounding countryside on three sides. I liked the small touches like providing bread, full bottle of milk and coffee and tea for breakfast. Very clean, good shower pressure and lovely grounds. Lots of spots to sit and enjoy a glass of wine around the castle.

Yup, it's a castle!

If you are looking at the Castello di Mugnana thinking that this can't be for real, well yes it is real! We spent 4 nights there recently and it was truly amazing. If you are into history, architecture, medieval, etc. and scenery and quiet, this place is definitely for you. You will need a car as there is no public transportation. Upon arrival we were greeted by Lucia. She was super nice and showed us how to operate all of the gates, lights, and doors to gain access to our particular room. After that we were left alone. The caretakers live right at the entrance but we didn't need anything. We stayed in the Double Room (Large). This was the room just to the upper left of the front gate. I called it the guard house as we had to traverse the wall above the gate to get to it. Since you have to cross a gravel courtyard, grass, and narrow stone steps to this room, heavy bags are a bit of a challenge because the wheels don't work well with the terrain. In the end it is well worth it and rewarding. Even though this room is not in the tower, the views are still amazing and the room is HUGE. There is a small town about 3 miles away with a Carrefour Express market to get supplies and groceries. You are in the country so English is not spoken too well or at all in these areas. The people were pleasant and helpful even though of our language barrier. Overall we had a fantastic time and will definitely stay here again when in the area.

Tuscan Perfection

Posted Jul. 5, 2017 on Hotels
If you could imagine a fantasy place to stay in Tuscany, the Castello is it. The castle is a thousand years old! It's in an incredible position at the side of a beautiful wooded valley and the views and the sunsets are just sublime. The gardens are exquisite and the swimming pool is an absolute dream. Our room was in the first floor of the tower- huge, spotlessly clean, filled with lovely antique furniture. The bathroom was big and there were even basic kitchen facilities- kettle, toaster, microwave, sink, fridge, which came in very useful and we weren't expecting. The owner is absolutely lovely, incredibly friendly, and left out a simple breakfast as well as tea/coffee and fresh milk which was a bonus. He also has some fantastic recommendations for some truly fabulous (and good value) local restaurants and wineries. I have been raving about this place ever since we returned and I can't wait to go back. If you want a peaceful, relaxing and authentic experience of Tuscany far from the main tourist trails this place is absolutely perfect.

Historic Castle on Florence/Siena border

Posted May 24, 2017 on Hotels
Giovanni was an amazing, informative host, and the castle is rich in history and ambiance. Beware, if you like the luxurious, finer things in life, you won't be happy here. The surrounding area is unmatched, and the history of the castle are its draws, but this is by no means a "princess" castle. History buffs who will appreciate its charm and surrounding beauty will be stoked like I was! Plenty of great places to eat and shop within a twenty minute drive, and some of the best views you'll see in your lifetime! I will stay here again!

Beautiful castle near Greve in Chianti

Posted Sep. 29, 2016 on Expedia
Pros: The remoteness of the castle, and the views of Tuscany are breathtaking. Also a very cool experience to stay in a castle!
Cons: There wasn't a hairdryer in the room - that would have helped. Also had to stand at one window to get the wi-fi, but it is a stone building.
Location: Beautiful location! Really close to Greve, and a good spot to get to other towns like Florence and Siena.
We stayed in the double bedroom on the second floor of the tower. Beautiful views of Tuscany out of the window. There isn't any lobby for this castle, but we made arrangements by email with Giovanni, who runs the place, to meet us at a certain time for check-in. He was there as expected, and showed us around the grounds. His English was very good - no problems in speaking with him. We loved staying in such an old building, with the benefit of having up-to-date rooms and amenities. They graciously left us with some food - bread and jam for breakfast, coffee, tea, milk, butter. We spent four nights here and it was a great central spot to get to some of the other towns/cities nearby. Florence and Siena are about an hour away by car. Would definitely go back!

Charming medieval Tuscan castle with some mod-cons

Posted Sep. 12, 2016 on Hotels
This castle dates back in parts over 1000 years, but mostly from ~1300AD. We stayed in the tower (which does have a small elevator to help with getting you and your bags up). If you love charming, authentic medieval surrounds, this is perfect. With three foot thick stone walls, wifi is available if you position yourself at the window, but is more than adequate for planning your next day's adventures to yet another part of Tuscany. The shower is hot, and the bathroom modern. There is a swimming pool on site but otherwise it feels like you've stepped back a millennium. Giovanni the owner/host is very helpful (in excellent English). Don't expect daily room service, but do expect a genuinely delightful and comfortable stay.

Local belíssimo, com estrutura rústica, muito bem localizado para quem quiser conhecer a região de Chianti e ter uma experiência única de se hospedar em um Castello medieval.
