Love the food and entertainment

The rooms are extremely nice and ALL the resturaunts serve excellent food. I temporarily gain weight each time I come here. They are always improving the landscape. I've been to the Riu in Ochos Rios and Negril?? But at least once a year we come to the one in Montego Bay since its opening a few years back. I love the proximity to the airport. The only problem I have is that I know all the nightly entertainment acts. I love the Michael Jackson show. I love the steel drum band that they bring in. I love the nightime beach parties. I love the bands that play before the night club Pacia opens. Don't care for the fire eater. There seems to be a cutback in the staff of entertainers and waitresses. You now have to get your own drinks and miss part of the nightly show. I've seen Grease at least 4 times. I guess they don't expect repeat guest. Why do the entertainers practice since they always do the same acts every year? There are two acts that are the same acts at the Grand Pallidium. The daytime entertainment is much better at the Iberostar Resort. (I visit Jamaica often). They need to improve the daytime entertainment. AGAIN, I love the Michael Jackson show. I think they should put up those bug zappers to kill the MANY mosqiutos. There used to be an opera singing bartender (I thought that was pretty neat). The fact that they have nightly entertainment puts them way above the rest. I've been to resorts with no nightly entertainment and thats a HUGE mistake. When I go on vacation, I just want to sit back RELAX with good food and be entertained.

Excellent place!

So happy I chose Riu for my first trip to Jamaica.  Everything about this place was great, especially the staff.  You really can't go wrong here, and I will definitely be staying here again in the future.

Great vacation spot!

We went to the RIU Montego Bay with some trepidation, the reviews from various sites are somewhat mixed. We left he resort wondering what all the fuss was about! Yes, the RIU is more of an economy resort. Yes, some resorts offer more amenities -like free scuba and transportation to and from the airport included, but the RIU excels in customer service, friendliness of the staff, a welcoming atmosphere, great drinks, good food, and a desire of seemingly everyone there to ensure that you have a great vacation in Jamaica! The PROs: * The Food - Despite what you will read in some of the reviews, the food was quite good every night. The lamb and the grilled tomatoes were excellent! The steakhouse restaurant was god (except for the appetizers which were pretty bad - fried frozen onion rings and wings -the mushrooms were good though). The jerk chicken and pork on the beach were great as was the red beans and rice. * The rooms - We were in building 6 on the beach. We had beautiful views of the ocean and sunsets and were far enough from the pool that the noise wasn't an issue. The room was clean and the fridge and liquor were kept filled (they say it is filled every two days but the guy will fill yours if you ask him as he is working the other rooms. * The pool - Beautiful huge pool! The staff at the swim-up and at the main bar were great. The drinks were great (if you want more/less/no alcohol just ask -they are more than willing to fix drinks to your taste! The pool staff are quick to control obnoxious drunks and keep the rowdier elements under control. * The beach - The beach is not world class (not bad, just not a lot of it) but there are plenty loungers and it is very clean and mostly stone free. * The water - Beautiful! CONs: * The beach - There just isn't a lot of beach here. There is enough but not great expanses of white sandy beaches. Also, the beach sand only goes out about 20 feet into the water, then you get that yucky beach-mud stuff that squishes between your toes. It isn't that way up closer to the pool side buildings but down around buildings 5-6 it is pretty gross. * The pool - The pool and the pool bars close WAY too early! It's a resort for goodness sake, the pool is closed at 6:30pm? Seriously?? * The entertainment - They try but they are just not very good. * The restaurants - They require reservations and are quickly booked up. It is unlikely that you will be able to set up reservations for anything closer than a couple days away (for example, we went Saturday to see if anything was available for that night and were told that there was nothing available for any of the restaurants until Tuesday!). That said, go ahead and get dressed, go to the first seating (7pm) and ask the hostess if you can get in. We were able to get 2nd (9pm) seating for the steakhouse with no trouble. Being nice to the staff helps! * The beds - The hardest bed I have ever slept on! I liked it because I had a sore back when we arrived, my wife equated it to sleeping on a park bench. Also, the "King" was actually two twins pushed together with one headboard and no anchor strap. It was awkward! ADVICE: Tips - Take a minimum of couple hundred dollars U.S. (you WILL NOT need to exchange at the airport regardless what they try to say when you get off the plane!) in small bills! The wait staff doesn't ask but they do accept tips, so do the bartenders -and the way they treat you, they deserve them! Everyone offsite (drivers, guides, tour guides, whatever, are VERY upfront, they expect a tip for doing everything and anything. There isn't anywhere to get cash after you leave the airport so bring it with you. It will cost you $20 U.S. to take a taxi from the airport. If the resort sets up a taxi for you, it costs the same. The return trip costs the same. * Tours - DO go to Bob Marley's AND to Dunn River Falls. DON'T do the both-in-one-day trip that is sold at the tour desk out front. We did and there just isn't enough time to do it all right. We wound up at the falls very late in the day and had to rush the climb. The falls could be a whole day trip alone. For reference: the trip to Bob Marley's house on the mountain roads is like a thrill ride! Narrow mountain roads and jam packed towns are worth the trip along. The guide you will have at the Marley compound (Benjamin, if you are lucky!) is a blast -remember, he isn't allowed to smoke on the tour but you are encouraged by him often should you so desire (we didn't)! There are a lot of interesting things to see there and the guide does make it a lot of fun. An FYI in case that last part wasn't clear enough - yes, there are drugs there for sale and those who buy DO light up as soon as they purchase them but No you are not required to purchase them. It's quite a cultural experience! Remember, IT IS illegal in Jamaica so if you do partake in the "amenities" don't be dumb enough to try to bring them home and get nailed by the dogs in the airport -Jamaican jails are not as hospitable as the RIU! Another tour is the snorkel/Margarettaville catamaran trip. We did it, it was fun. DON'T buy any of the stuff at the store they take you to though! It's a rip off! No, the watches are not real no matter what they tell you! Remember, if you sit up front and there is any chop, you WILL get drenched! OVERALL: The resort was great and we had a blast. We had very little to complain about. I would seriously recommend the RIU to my friends ... and you to!

Great hotel, nice pool, OK beach, good food

The RIU Montego Bay all inclusive resort is one of the nicer hotels in MB. We stayed here for 5 nights in Jun 13. Hotel is a very short distance from airport. The hotel in general is very nice; pool is clean, food is average, entertainment is good; staff is excellent and they encouraged people to do activities to have a good time. The mini bar in the room is very limited and they restocked every two days. I wished they had a game room with video, pool table, etc for the kids when they want to take a break from the pool/beach. There is a sport bar with pool table but you have to pay for it and it's mainly for adults. I love the jerk chicken at the beach for lunch. In all I would stay at this resort again if have a chance.

We would not recommend this hotel.

Pros: theme restaurants were very good.
Cons: No free Internet
We paid for an ocean view room and there was no ocean in view. The bed and pillows were very uncomfortable. We had to look for pillow cases. We finally found someone with some in a cart. Also, for two nights we did not have face cloths and hand towels. Finally, the worst part was that there were ROACHES in the room! We asked the front desk manager to have the room sprayed. However, no one came. Now we are hoping we did not bring any home. We will not return to this hotel.

Some of the coolest and friendliest staff/people around!

Pros: Free breakfast
Greeted with rum punch in lobby. Registration a breeze. Took a 1/2 day to catch on to where everything was and learned what to do. Food available at anytime, day or night. Great drinks although I feel they could have had more alcohol. They pleasantly abliged when asked to add more. The first morning there, we went to pool at 8:30 am to find every seat taken. Some people never came back to their seats all day. That was frustrating. We learned quickly to put our towels at night when we went to bed - I dont agree with this but it was the only way to get a chair that we actually used! The jerk chicken on the beach was amazing! Shows were great! The resort was clean, rooms were clean but nothing fancy. The grounds were well manicured and Riu has the best staff ever! I loved all of them! The most facinating people I ever met. They are so laid back, fun and helpful! The only con I have is no bar for the beach and the pool bar sometimes took 5-10 minutes to get a drink. A great place, a great location and I would definitely go back!
