Charming old city hotel

Location: Very near Stuyvescent Square and a few blocks from Gramercy Park. Lots of restaurants on Third Avenue.
Very well maintained and/or renovated and decorated with nice woodwork and nice colors. Tiny room but comfortable once you figure out the A/C. Simple bathrooms down the hall. Hotel will convert to long-term stays.

Ugly but Honest!

Pros: The location of the hotel was the best part as a tourist. We were able to travel everywhere efficiently and affordably.
Cons: Neutralize the smell of urine in the stairways.
Location: Union Sqayure is nearby, which makes it easy to travel by subway. Joe's Pizza is nearby which is the best pizza in NYC.
The Good: Hotel was affordable and in an convenient neighborhood. Union Square was a 5 minute walk, Joe's Pizza was a 3 minute walk and everything you could have needed was just a couple blocks away. The Hotel was in a residential neighborhood and it made me feel like I lived there not that I was a tourist. The Bad: Rooms were small, elevator is tiny, bathrooms were in the hallway and stairways smelled like urine. Don't stay here if you are fat/big/claustrophobic.

Leafy green street

Lovely old building in great location for walking, close to Union Square market, a park, and subway. Westside Market and Trader Joe's in easy walking distance for picnics in the park. Rooms are basically sleeping rooms, not suitable for eating in or hanging out, but fine for travellers on the go. Bathrooms down the hall were always free and clean, no issues there. Nice to stay on a shady, quiet, residential street in an old fashioned place.

Inexpensive hotel in center of Manhattan

Pros: Elegant, an antique motif, very clean, good service, and extremely quiet.
Cons: Nothing I can think of. The five steps from street level to the entrance are steep, but that can't be improved.
Location: It's centrally located in mid-town Manhattan. Need I say more. Subway service goes almost everywhere and buses do the rest.
A great place to stay for an inexpensive price in Manhattan, as long as you don't mind shared bathrooms (two for every 8 rooms). However, most rooms have wash basins.

One night

Cons: The smells need to be taken care of and clearly the room needs to be free of bugs.
Unfortunately, while the hotel is a pleasant old building, the hallways smell of something rotten, there was a dead cockroach on the floor of my hotel room and the shared bath was less than appealing.

Good value for the price!

Pros: The location, cleanliness, and relatively quiet.
Cons: The internet was a little slow at times.
Location: Many bars and restaurants in the area.
This is a European Style Hotel. It's in a convenient location in the Union Square area. Many restaurants and bars, about 3 blocks to the closest subway stop. It is one stop from Grand Central Station. Easy access to Greenwich Village, Times Square, etc. Bathrooms are shared, right across the hall from the room.

Convenient

While hotel isnt some fancy hotel it is a wonderful gem. I needed a cheap, clean room that was centrally located and while every hotel I checked was nice they were out of my budget. Hotel 17 was very clean, a bit out of date but the room served its purpose a place to dump my stuff while I went out and about to have fun in the city. The room was small but honestly I only needed the space to get ready and sleep. The hotel is also quite and was able to get my zzzz... Would use again!!!!

Clean & Safe Inexpensive Hotel in NYC

Pros: Clean, inexpensive, quiet (except AC unit)
Cons: The window AC unit was noisy
Location: Convenient to Union Square and Flatiron Districts, which have lots of restaurants and shops
Hotel 17 has a good location a few blocks east of the Union Square area of Manhattan. Rooms are clean, but lack an in-unit shower (though mine had a sink). The shared bathroom & shower was not a problem for me, as during my 2 night stay I never saw another person on my floor. There are about 5 to 6 rooms per bathroom/shower. My only complaint was that the window AC was noisy. Also, the maid did not clean the room, but that wasn't an issue for me as it wasn't dirty to begin with. If you want an inexpensive place in Manhattan in a nice area, I'd recommend staying here.

Best kept secret in Manhattan

Pros: For a thoroughly updated hotel, they manage to maintain all of the stylings and charm of the original building... really takes you back in time!
Cons: Air conditioner was a little noisy, but that is a minor complaint.
Location: Close to the subway, VERY quiet neighborhood, lots of little places to eat nearby. (Try Gramercy Cafe down the street.)
I was a little skeptical about this hotel, given the incredibly low rates for Manhattan, but this place was a real gem. In a quiet neighborhood off of a busy street, it's the best of both worlds. I slept with the window open one night and only once heard a distant fire engine in the middle of the night; plus, I hardly any sounds from the neighboring rooms, and the hotel was full when I was there. The single rooms are very small (more like dorm rooms), but that was perfect for me... and most people aren't going to be spending time in their rooms anyway. Some may be concerned about the separate bathrooms, but I was there five nights and never saw a single person in the hallway, let alone using the bathroom! The fact that I could touch the bathroom door from my room door made it especially convenient. I love the atmosphere of the place, as well as the layout.
