Paradise!

This resort was amazing and our villa was very private! Be prepared to shell a pretty penny, but you can expect everything to be top notch. Highly recommend the buffet style breakfast at Oriente. Very delicious & high quality food. The eco tour is pretty cool, think Disney's jungle cruise. You can appreciate the flora, fauna and some wildlife from a safe distance. The service here is one of a kind. Everyone is friendly and accommodating. They all made my stay very memorable. They have a solutions-based approach should you have a concern. I suffer from GERD, but the wedge & body pillow I normally sleep with were just too bulky to travel with. Knowing it was a long shot, I reached out to inquire about having a wedge in their pillow menu. Viviana replied that while they did not have one, they could incline the head of my bed 45 degrees and voila my concern was resolved. I avoided having to find a travel wedge pillow for the trip. Slept like a baby each night. That is just one example of how they go above and beyond for you. Lastly, here's what I highly recommend from In-Villa dining. I'm sure everything is great, but these were my husband and my favorites: Citrus chicken, grilled plantains, shrimp tacos. Desserts: churros from Tomahawk, chocolate tamale were mouth-watering!

Most amazing place I have stayed

Stayed 4 nights here and was absolutely blown away by the villa, the staff and attention to every detail. Resort staff was extremely attentive to our every need and eager to make sure we were enjoying our experience. Marisio was our personal concierge and we couldn't say enough about how he treated us and made us feel at home. The Villas are amazing. I would highly recommend the ones with a jacuzzi. We will definately be back!!

Pure Luxury

Pros: Service. We had a very minor problem with room at check-in, and the staff went way above and beyond what we expected to fix it.
This was our fifth stay at this resort. The villas are huge and each has its own private pool. The decor is beautiful, the food excellent, and service top notch. The resort is especially lovely at night when when everything is lit with soft lighting. Most of the villas are not on the beach but it's an easy buggy, boat, or bike ride to get there. We actually spend more time in the villa relaxing by the pool than at the beach. But, a lot of work has been done on the beach to make it very enjoyable. It's hard to explain how wonderful this place is without experiencing it for yourself. There's always soft music playing and scented oils burning, including in your villa when housekeeping comes for turn down service. It's a quiet place so if you want night life and partying this probably isn't your cup of tea. One of the main reasons we return every year is the staff. They are so friendly and many of them remember us upon our return. Banyan Tree is definitely pricier than all-inclusives, but it's worth every penny. I'm already counting down til next year!

Paradise

This was our third trip to Banyan Tree and we still love it.  Everything about this resort was outstanding.  The villa, lobby, and grounds were all beautiful. The food was delicious, and every single person working there was more than friendly.  We loved having a private pool in the villa.  We will definitely be going back again.

nothing bad about this resort!

Pros: Free breakfast, Close restaurants, Free Internet, Quiet
we went for our "babymoon" and it was perfect. villas were exquisite, restaurants were delicious, albeit expensive, spa was one of the best I've been to, and the overall experience was really flawless

Lots of mistakes, had to move rooms, service not what was expected (management)

Pros: Free breakfast
Cons: Nothing close, large parties
I vacationed here about 3 weeks ago. The mangroves are beautiful. If you like to play golf, it is a must. I made the mistake of booking a townhouse. I am handicapped and there are a TON of stairs. Our resort host that checked us in spoke so soft, and not the best english, that we had no idea how the resort was laid out. When we got to the Townhome she came in with us. The only thing I did understand was she said "I hope you like stairs". Which immediately caught my attention. She showed us around the first level. I asked her where the bathroom was. She took me over to a long, dark, musty stairwell (no handrails) and said it was downstairs. I was shocked. I would have to go up and down these stairs many times a day. We had booked a one bedroom town home. They do not have one bedroom town homes so they put you in a three bedroom three baths and just close the other doors. I told the resort host that I had no idea when I booked there would be so many stairs. She just looked at me. I asked her if we could be moved, nothing. Then we went to the other side of the living room and we were surprised to see many more steps up to the private deck and plunge pool. If you book and want a heated plunge pool make sure it's confirmed with the hotel a couple of times. We did not get a heated pool. It was very nice when the sun was out but cold when the sun went down. I am sure in the warmer months there are no issues. The resort host left and we did not know anymore than when we got off the plane. The living room is very big and very nice! DO NOT TAKE ROOM 619. I had been warned from another review I had read not to take this room. When we got to the room things looked okay. It's not okay. If it rains at all, which it did, you will have a waterfall cascading down into the master bathroom . They know this will happen but choose to put people in it anyway. It rained so hard one night, we went to dinner down at the beach. The restaurant staff are excellent . The only issues are that if it rains the water blows in from glass panels that are not sealed. I'm sure there is a good reason for it. We got soaked. I hope to share the picture. At first it was a light mist but then it was more like a spring shower with heavy winds. The food was very good. We just laughed about it. When we got back to the townhome we walked in and looked at each other . "Did you leave the shower running" we both asked each other. The water had come in by the front door and I almost slipped getting in the door. We walked downstairs calling out in case someone had broken in or the turn down girls were running the shower. We went into the master bedroom and just gasped. There was water pouring out of the ceiling into the bathroom. I told my husband that the previous reviews about this room were correct, it leaks every time it rains. If they pull up in front of that town home when you check in get a guarantee that they fixed the problem So, at 10pm at night, still raining, we had to pack all our things and move. I thought this was the time when they would move us to a place with less stairs, nope we got the same layout 4 doors down. I think it was room 624. Much better views from this room as well. All our things got wet in the move. I told the people who came and moved us how upset I was but I guess it never got through to management. If you like to walk, this is the place for you. To get anywhere you have to take a golf cart. It can take up to 45 minutes for one to get to you. If you can, rent bikes and take them everywhere. The first night there was Fireworks. I had fallen asleep at 10:30 and was woken up by a loud boom and hissing noises. I looked outside and there was a professional firework display . There was a private group staying there and they were putting it on for their guests. If there is a private function going on while you are there be prepared to only have access to one restaurant at any time. There are only four restaurants and they are only open on certain nights. We had room service three out of our five nights. One night we went to Playa Del Carmen. It is worth the taxi money to go. When we got up to the front where you wait for the taxi's we made sure the guy knew who we were and what we were waiting for. He nodded and told us to wait inside. There was a private beach party that night after a reception in one of the restaurants. The vans were pulling up and taking people to the beach. We waited 40 minutes and then went outside. The guy said he didn't call but now one was coming. Now, all the staff are nice and I want to make sure I add the good in this too. The breakfast is amazing. The buffet had many options to choose from and if you can get a package with this included I would do it. All the staff knew you by name after the first day. They can make Kosher meals if needed. I am sure they can provide for any special needs. The beach is small but nice. If it is high tide make sure you are pushed all the way up to the wall. I almost lost my iPad to a rogue wave:)) The beach staff are excellent. Carlos saw that I was having a hard time getting down the stairs at the beach and became my escort for the rest of the stay. The drinks are great, alcohol or non. The pool overlooks the water and is a nice change from the ocean. Some people have said that there are many rocks in the ocean but we did not find that it was anything that would keep you from going in. There is seaweed. They try and keep it clean but hey, it's the ocean:) It's better on days without wind. It's a nice walking beach. You can walk over to the Fairmont and have lunch. The eco tour is a must! If they say it's sold out go and wait by the dock anyway. We got on no problem when we did that. We saw crocodiles and fossils and caves. We enjoyed it very much and Jose is excellent guide. The spa....the best part of my trip. I had the most amazing spa treatments. I had the healing touches package which was three hours long. Pure bliss. The best massage and services I have ever had. In our package we got a 90 minute massage included. My husband came out and said the same thing. He usually hates spa's at hotels but he could not say more about how great his massage was. I also did the rainforest experience. For $38 I would say go for it. Take advantage of the turn down service. They give you little gifts every night! I loved it. We did not get a chance to try Saffron or their other restaurant so I can't comment on the food. When getting on and off golf carts make sure the driver is paying attention to you. I was trying to get on the backseat and he took off with one leg on the cart another on the ground with my husband holding on to me. It was a scary experience for one who has bad legs to begin with. Take what you want from this review and ask me any more questions. The Banyan Tree has handled our misfortunes appropriately so I will give them a big thumbs up for that. I will be back, I know how it all works now and expect to have a fantastic experience when I go back. The people that I mentioned were great, the service from the beach and pool excellent. The golf cart drivers are hit or miss. No one explained if we were supposed to tip them every time they came. Since it was the only way around we did not tip except for when they brought our luggage up, had to move us because of the waterfall , and when we left. I expected more from a 5 star hotel and I am sure when I go back my next review will be different

Best Vacation EVER!

I booked a trip with Banyan Tree Mayakoba back in August 2010 as a surprise birthday present for my husband. The whole experience was beyond our expectation. The entire place was beautifully constructed, tastefully decorated and blended in with the unique natural environment around. Our villa was gorgeous and maticulately decorated, and cleaned daily. The service all around was superb! We felt like royalty for 3 days! The staff was very attentive but not over barring. The food was excellent as well! And the spa experience is indescribable. Although pricy, we felt it was way worth every penny and is saving up to go back for more hopefully next year!!!!
