The Fairmont Royal York

100 Front St West, Toronto - Map
"Outstanding experience, perfect location"
The good: The ambiance, quality of fixtures, and quality of dining and shopping in and around the hotel is outstanding. The front desk staff is professional, courteous, and accommodating. The location is among the best, being connected to Union Station by way of the PATH. It's a beautiful hotel with an old world meets contemporary feel. The bad: The hotel is supposedly non-smoking, but we stayed during Caribana, which apparently is a great time to indulge in pot smoking. We moved to a room along the perimeter because the halls were so full of smoke. The problem is that the hotel does absolutely nothing to enforce the non-smoking policy, despite exiting the elevators on every floor and walking into a pot cloud. It was obvious just by walking by the rooms from which ones the smoke originated, but the hotel seemed not to care. This part was VERY unfortunate.

"Comfortable and convenient "
Hotel nice. Like to spend night or 2 on our way to and from Canada. Every time, large events have also been there, which is fine, except smoking permitted at hotel entrance. So have to make your way thru 20-30 smokers just to check in. Smoke drifts into lobby. As asthmatic, it made me ill; had to use back entrance, where people also smoke, but there were fewer. Room was nice and clean, but it's hard when I need to use inhaler every time I enter and exit building.

"central spot for everything we wanted to do"
Los of walking, but centrally located to what we wanted to do. Time went to fast, only spent one night. Breakfast ok, but nothing spectacular, but free. Extra charge for second cup of coffee. No free refills. Watch out for the shower, now grab bars and definitely not for handicapped. Floor of shower was slippery and no towel racks for hanging wet towels. Cold not find a wash cloth, didn't bother asking housekeeping since it was late when we got back to our room. Bed was comfortable and the AC worked just great.

"Excellent Surprise"
Didn't expect this hotel to be so large, have such classy décor, and have such a large and varied restaurant for meals. Great outdoor patio. Walking distance to major Toronto attractions. Reasonable price. Would definitely look to stay there again. Staff was very friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to serve.

"Tiny room and beds but more than served its purpos"
I have been going to TIFF for the past 7-8 years and have only switched hotels twice. This time, I tried the Strathcona for its excellent location to most of the theatres. It's a 3 block walk in comparison to a cab ride which worked wonders this year with the rain. In any event, location, location, location. Excellent. The size of the room was a shock. So small and with twin beds which I had forgotten was part of the package. Staff was nice although not seeing anyone at the lobby desk at midnight on one night was a little disconcerting. In the end, it was a pleasant experience mainly because I was only in the room to sleep between movies.
