What you can expect

Embark on a 2-day journey to immerse yourself in the culture, traditions, and history of the Otavaleños, an ethnic group located in northern Ecuador. Along the way, visit indigenous craft workshops, hike to the waterfall of Peguche, and see the crater lake of Cuicocha.

Day 1: Lago San Pablo, Otavalo market & Peguche Village Get picked up from your hotel in Quito and head north to Lago San Pablo, where you can get a great view of the volcano and the lake. Continue to an indigenous weaving workshop in Peguche, and learn about the rich crafting practice in Otavalo, which helps to preserve the indigenous culture and traditions. Afterwards, make a short walk to the Peguche waterfall, the site of a sacred swimming ritual that takes place during the summer solstice festival of Inti Raymi.

Day 2: Condor Park, Cotacachi, Cuicocha Lake & Return to Quito Get an early breakfast before checking out Condor Park, a wildlife rehabilitation centre and refuge on the outskirts of Otavalo. Next, visit Cotacachi, the centre of Ecuador's leather industry, where you can find high quality leatherjackets, boots, and handbags for reasonable bargains. Finally, ascend to Cuicocha Lake, a crater of an extinct volcano from over 3,000 years ago. Learn how the indigenous people make offerings in the centre of the lake during solstice. At the end of your adventure, return to your hotel in Quito.
