Description

For 300 days and nights in 1916, battle raged in Verdun. An average of 70,000 soldiers fell each month. Visit the site of one of the deadliest, longest, and most costly battles in human history, and then pay your respects at the Meuse-Argonna American Cemetery and Memorial.

Meet your guide in Paris and settle into a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle for the ride out to Verdun. listening as your guide explains what the offensive was like, as fighting went on day and night on a battlefield covering less than 7.7 square miles (20 sq km). See the profound marks left on the landscape, evidence of the violence that took place here, and visit the Douaumont Ossuary, which houses the remains of both French and German soldiers.

Walk around the overgrown and ruined defensive walls of Fort Douaumont, walk through the Trench of Bayonets—a memorial to French soldiers buried alive in their trench after a shell explosion—and see the old, grassy line of the London Trench.

Break for lunch, and then see the part of the battlefields where General Pershing's American forces joined the fray in September of 1918. Before you return to Paris, take some time to visit the War Museum in Romagne and pay your respects at the Meuse-Argonna American Cemetery, where more than 14,000 graves mark the final resting places of the largest number of American dead in Europe.
