What you can expect

Uncover 2 of the most fascinating Maya archaeological sites in El Salvador on this group half-day tour. Follow a knowledgeable guide to Joya de Cerén where you learn how everyday Mayas lived and discover a well-preserved farming village, then head to San Andrés, an important government centre.

Your adventure begins when you're picked up from your hotel and transported to Joya de Cerén, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the “Pompeii of the Americas.” This nickname is due to the fact that this pre-Columbian Maya farming village was covered by layers of volcanic ash from a large eruption. Archaeologists have been able to gain a full-scope understanding of the civilisation due to the well-preserved artefacts found here.

Continue along to the San Andrés archaeological site, an important political and religious centre whose occupation dates back to 900 BC. Walk around the site, where a number of small hills are covered with diverse structures used by powerful governors as strongholds against their enemies.
