What you can expect

Vineyards glow golden in the autumn sun, the perfume of Mediterranean herbs rises from the brush, and fruit hangs heavy from the silvery branches of centuries-old olive trees. There’s an undeniable romance to harvest season in Provence, and this hands-on olive picking experience is the perfect way to soak it up.

Head north from Marseille towards the charming villages, forested valleys, and rocky hillsides of the Luberon, making your way to a small family-run farm near the country village of Cadenet. Meet your hosts and set out for a tour of the picturesque property, which is filled with fruit trees, vineyards, beehives, herbs, and truffle oaks.

Walk to the olive grove for a demonstration on how to pick the raw green olives from the branches, and then grab a basket and get started. As you gather olives, an activity that’s been practised in this region since Roman times, learn all about the processes of pruning, planting, and harvesting the trees as well as the traditional methods for pressing olive oil.

Once your basket is full, meander back in the direction of the farmhouse, where a poolside country-style buffet awaits you. Sample the estate’s own olive oil and truffle oil, fill a glass with local wine, and sit back to enjoy the view over the olive groves as you dine on hearty French snacks like charcuterie, cheeses, pâté, and freshly baked baguettes.
