What you can expect

Visit renowned Maya archaeological sites in El Salvador with a knowledgeable guide who reveals the fascinating history behind each location. Check out Joya de Cerén, a pre-Columbian Maya village preserved in volcanic ash, San Andrés, an important political centre, and Tazumal’s impressive pyramid.

Your adventure begins when you’re picked up from your hotel by your certified guide and transported into the jungle to the UNESCO-listed site Joya de Cerén, known as the Pompeii of the Americas, due to the volcanic eruption that preserved it in layers of thick ash. Explore the pre-Columbian Maya farming village where artefacts such as utensils, ceramics, furniture, and even half-eaten food can be found.

Continue along to the San Andrés archaeological site, an important political and religious centre inhabited from 900 BC to 250 AD. Covered in many small hills with the stone remnants of important buildings littering the complex, your guide reveals what little is known about this place as you explore.

Take a break from ancient sites as you wander around the city of Santa Ana, visiting the historic centre for a look at the National Palace, and its Neo-Gothic Cathedral. Before heading back to your hotel, stop by Tazumal, another magnificent Maya architectural compound featuring the largest pyramid in El Salvador.
