What you can expect

Witness an awe-inspiring natural spectacle with a private day trip that shows you Mexico's central highlands filled with migrating monarch butterflies. Up to 1 billion butterflies make the journey from eastern Canada every year, creating an incredible sight in the wilderness.

Your guide choices you up from your hotel in the morning for the ride into the forests of Mexico. The trip brings you to the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, where the butterflies gather after a 3,000-mile (4,800-km) journey to wait out the winter.

The presence of this huge crowd of colourful insects gives the forest a vivid orange colour as you walk, or if you prefer, you can pay for a ride on horseback along a gentle uphill trail that runs through the sanctuary. Learn how the butterflies' arrival, which tends to coincide with the Day of the Dead, led to the belief that that these monarchs carry the souls of the departed. Finally, look out over Butterfly Valley to admire this natural phenomenon from a unique and spectacular vantage.
