What you can expect

Get a look at traditional Malaysian life at the Sarawak Cultural Village on a half-day tour through this living museum. You can see rural homes stocked with household items from different regions, and watch locals demonstrate the culture that defined much of Malaysia's history.

A ride from your Kuching hotel covers the short distance to the Sarawak Cultural Village, set on sprawling grounds surrounded by verdant forest land. As you stroll through the village, admire 7 authentic replicas of houses that represent the different regions and social classes of Sarawak society, including a Chinese farmhouse, Malay stilted house, Melanau tall house, and Penan hut.

With demonstrations of crafts like embroidery, bamboo carving, and woodworking, you can see household items being made out of straw and even try your hand at a handicraft or two. Get your camera ready at the village theatre as the village's folk dancers perform traditional dances from the various tribes of Sarawak.

Before you leave, check out cultural artefacts in the longhouses of the Iban, Bidayuh, and Orang Ulu people to gain more insight into Sarawak customs.
