Description

Head out west and into the striking landscape of the Snaefellsnes National Park on Snaefellsnes peninsula. Snaefellsnes is a small region of Iceland and yet it encapsulates most of the natural features that make the island so unique. It’s rich in history and is home to Snaefellsjokull, a volcano under a glacier, lava fields, soaring cliffs that are home to a variety of sea birds, black and golden sand beaches and quaint villages.

Take a Walk on the Wild Side

The beaches and steep seaside cliffs attract seals and a variety of sea birds to Snaefellsnes and the first stop on the peninsula is great for seal spotting. Yngri-Tunga beach, near a farm of the same name, is rare in Iceland in that its sands are golden instead of black and is a popular hang out for Harbour and Grey Seals. While exploring the peninsula, be sure to keep an eye out for seabirds as many locations in Snaefellsnes National Park and all along the seasides are ideal for birdwatching.

Icelandic Villages and a Volcanic Glacier

Snaefellsnes is dotted with many of the small fishing villages that have been the beating heart of Iceland for centuries. You’ll stop in the village of Arnarstapi for lunch and walk along its precipitous shoreline and take in stunning ocean views. From Arnastapi, you’ll make a stop at the tranquil black-pebbled beach at Djúpalónssandur with its gorgeous views of the sea and of Snaefellsjokull glacier. Such a wondrous place is Snaefellsjokull glacier that it is where Jules Vernes set the entrance for his “Journey to the Center of the Earth”. From Djupalonssandur you will journey through the striking landscape to Grundarfjordur, a village on the north coast where you’ll lay eyes on what is considered to be one of the most beautiful mountains in the world, Kirkjufell, which soars more than 450 meters (1500ft.) up from the shoreline.

The Road Berserks Built

From Grundarfjordur, you’ll cross Berserkjahraun lava fields. According to legend, this is the place where two Swedish “Berserks” laid Iceland’s first road. Then it is on through Vatnaleid pass and back to the south coast of the peninsula.

excellent trip! Extremely nice views! The nature is so beautiful and unique that I couldn't stop to admire. Comfortable bus with nice driver. I didn't really like the guide - he spoke quietly and it was hard to understand him but even that didn't mess up the trip because of the program itself.

Excellent, I recommend this tour to everyone, we stopped in black sand beaches, some beautiful waterfalls, amazing panoramic views and a lava cave.
