The extraordinary fortress is today lying on a gentle green hill 20 kilometres from Andria set in the Alta Murgia National Park. Built around 1240, Castel del Monte became the permanent seat of the court of Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, who became only a sovereign of the Kingdom of Sicily. The monarch, nicknamed Stupor Mundi for his eclecticism and the vastness of his culture, left all the mystery surrounding his figure to his Castle. Since 1996 registered in the list of UNESCO World Heritage monuments. The mysterious octagonal plan of the manor, perhaps used as an astronomical observatory or an impressive hunting lodge, differs significantly in its structure from all the other castles of Puglia.
