Great location, an easy stroll to the old city, cafes, museums, the cathedral, shops, the river and public transport. Set right in the midst of it all. Apartment was spacious and comfortable.

Great location and space, lots of natural light. Main room nicely appointed. Felt at home in the apartment. The bed & pillows could improve, and the shower was tiny. Stairs may be difficult for elderly or any excess luggage.

Not what we expected.

Comfy beds and nice showers & bath tub. 2 baths but just one toilet and it's inside one of the bedrooms. The 2nd bathroom is sink and shower only and is in the hallway. No TVs, frigde, or microwave. No elevator and inconvenient parking, room was a block away from check in. Not recommended for taking children. But the beds were top of the line. Restaurant was delicious and friendly.

Nice apartment style rooms close to everything.

We needed a place to stay with 3 people so the apartment style rooms with separate bedroom and living room areas was nice. The apartment was clean and had a refrigerator and small kitchen area. You do have to climb a small steep staircase to get to the rooms. We were able to leave our bags for a few hours in the Waffle House downstairs. Unfortunately, the restaurant didn't open until 10 am so we had to have breakfast next door and come back for waffles later. After 6 pm you have to call across the street for a key since there is no reception. The owners are a very nice family.

Disappointed and beware!

Extremely disappointed. The Junior suite at the top of the stairs was not worth the climb and did not match the 3 star / Expedia rating or room description. Finishes were shoddy and the smell from the restaurant below permeated the room. I decided to find a different hotel. THIS WAS NON REFUNDABLE SO I DID NOT GET ANY REFUND for the 8 night booking!

No Hot Water, Poor Facility, No Service, Worst Exp

For a single-night stay, this place is still over my tolerance. Let me explain why: 1) There is NO HOT WATER, at night, in the morning, during the day, the kitchenette, the shower.. Sometimes you get 15 seconds of hot water, but it then turns cold. 2) The room is extremely poor. The TV is 17" with a remote whose CH-/CH+ buttons are broken (so you have to manually change the channels). There's no real curtain on the windows (only short plasticky ones that are translucent). Many other things. OK, it's a cheap place, but the things that don't work aren't luxury. 3) Not really clean. The bedding is old and has stains. The light switches have grease / marks. The towels also have new stains (have they been changed)? I'm making this negative comment because I'd like 1) other potential visitors not to suffer and 2) the owners to improve. Although it's my first time to Antwerp, I'd like to think there're better options for the price I paid. The city is very clean and beautiful, better than Brussels.

Great area, good value

Good value for money apartment, clean and well kept. Not suitable if you can't handle carrying your luggage up many flights of steep narrow stairs. We stayed in the top floor apartment which was 8 flights up. I would suggest this particular apartment for couples only as the toilet door was a swinging half barn door with no privacy. Nevertheless we enjoyed our stay here and would recommend for younger couples.

Good location close to shopping, dining, and Antwerp center. This is an excellent value - so long as you don't need a 24 hour concierege, room service or a fitness center. Spacious with a large living area with kitchen and a separate bedroom and bath. Would defiunitely stay here again.

Great apartment, waffles, and City!

Our 1st floor (the whole floor) apartment was perfect. Located directly above the best waffle shop and small restaurant in Antwerp. A lovely women and her son operate both the street level business and the 3 apartments, so there is always someone available if you have any questions or need another 'way-to-good' waffle with a homemade topping. Great location on an important but very quiet street with all services and a short interesting walk to Our Lady's Cathedral, Rubens' House, and everything historic. Great place to stay in a great, very interesting, city.

Great hotel! Loved the location and the apartment like set up was great. Zora who works in the restaurant was awesome. Within easy walking distance to the Cathedral and pretty much all the sights! Only draw back was we only stayed one night.

More than a hotel room less than a full apartment

One large room to include bed, sofa, kitchen area and an en-suite bathroom. We had the top room so probably the smallest but it was just right for the 2 of us. Pro's: Clean, comfortable, the lady who runs it was lovely and very helpful, 10 minute walk to main area. Cons: Lots of stairs & no lift, the bathroom is small but if you have a sense of humour you will be fine.

A "Home away from Home" in Antwerp

If you require a "home away from home" in Antwerp within 5 minutes walk of the main square then this is ideal. The apartment I had was at the top of the building (no lift) so you need to be fit unless you get a lower floor and it was well appointed and clean with plenty of space an facilities. The lady who manages the rooms and runs the Waffle house below is a joy.... she cannot do enough to make you welcome and to help you. It is NOT a hotel and as long as you know that then it is a great place to stay

Great Hotel...Location has it downfalls

We frequently visit Antwerp and have stayed at a variety of hotels. Aparthotel Van Hecke is located in a very convenient location close to the center square. The rooms are very nice and clean with a simple kitchenette, a comfortable lounge (large sofas, enough space for an extra person), though, there are no elevators and the hike to the top floor might be a little uncomfortable for those with dodgy knees or other ailments. Van Hecke maintains a few parking spaces in a local parking garage at the Cammerporte hotel, about a five minute walk up the road. Unfortunately for us, our cars were targeted for theft the night we stayed; the hoodlums made way with a pair of sunglasses and other minor things, leaving us with a shattered side window. This entire experience would have been profoundly worse had it not been for the Van Hecke manager, Zora (who owns a small restaurant downstairs). Zora was absolutely fantastic; she alerted us that our vehicles had been broken into, walked with us to the car park, helped us translate with the local police, and was completely helpful and sympathetic (she also makes a brilliant breakfast). The hotel location is within the city, so one has to realize that break-ins and local petty crimes are subject to increase in this area. If you can get past this fact, this is a great place to stay and we will always be staying here because of Zora.

Ideal Location

The Aparthotel Van Hecke was easy to find with a Tom Tom. Unfortunately, the middle of Antwerp is a construction site with many roads being dug up. This will go on for another year so beware. Best not to use the hotel parking until this is resolved. It required the help of the owner directing me in my vehicle to find it. It still took 20 minutes to get to the car park even though it was no more than 400 meters away! The Aparthotel is ideally situated close to most of the sights. The owners were incredibly welcoming and friendly so it is a shame that we have to be critical about our stay. It is difficult to describe this apartment as a hotel as there were no services available, although the owner lives in the adjoining apartment. The rooms we stayed in were above the Waffle Restaurant and are full of character. The space is vast although it did feel unfinished. There was a rather unpleasant drainage smell emanating from the bathroom. The beds were rather hard. We were unlucky with the weather and found things to do on a rainy Sunday were difficult because, apart from the museums and restaurants, Antwerp closes on Sunday! The museums close on Monday! Antwerp is a vibrant City with lots going on. If the weather is fine there is plenty to do for a weekend stay. We may go back but probably not to the Aparthotel Van Hecke.

Good price/quality

Aparthotel Van Hecke is a very desent place to stay with a more then friendly welcome. The rooms are not expensively decorated but are very neat and modern. It is in a superb location right between the historical city center and the hip and vibrant south.
