Cefalu: CefalĂč is set on the northern coast, 75 kilometres east of Palermo, from which it is about forty-five minutes by car, a bit longer by train. CefalĂč is a picturesque medieval fishing village that enjoys a splendid position between the sea and a rocky promontory (Rocca of CefalĂč). CefalĂč is a built on the site of an ancient Sican an Greek settlement. The town saw its maximum development under the Norman king Roger II, The town nowadays is divided in two parts an old part that is mainly for pedestrians and has many nice little boutiques, shops and restaurants, and a new modern part.
The old town centre is dominated by the cathedral. According to tradition the cathedral and the adjoining abbey and cloister, the building was erected after a vow made to the Holy Saviour by the King of Sicily, Roger II, after he escaped from a storm to land on the city beach. The building was started in 1131. Imposing and attractive, the cathedral is a synthesis of several cultures. It was built by Norman
Around Cefalu: round CefalĂč, places of interest include the Sanctuary of Gibilmanna - a hillside pilgrimage destination-, the ruins of Greek Himera, the Natural Park of Madonie mountains and Castelbuono - a mountain medieval town about 25 kilometres from CefalĂč famous for the castle once owned by the Ventimiglia family, feudal lords of several towns in the area-. Finally, CefalĂč is famous as touristic site also for its magnificent white sandy beaches. The main sandy beach is in front of CefalĂč and itâs called âlungomareâ. There, itâs possible to find many different lidos that offer sun beds and umbrellas, as well as public beaches where you can stay for free. Lungomare is mainly a tourist beach and is very safe and strongly recommended for families with children.
Travelling as two families with 4 adults and 5 children (ages 11 to 17), we enjoyed our holiday at this property, which has great view overlooking the sea from its location in the hills above Cefalu. The villa is about 400 metres above sea level, on the winding mountain road up to the sanctuary at Gibilmanna. This made for a very pleasant climate (noticeably less humid than in Cefalu itself), great views and a calming location, although it does mean that a car is absolutely essential as there are no shops or restaurants closer than a 15 minute drive away. The property itself is made of three separate buildings - a row of 4 bedrooms, with a detached kitchen / living room opposite that, and a separate annex with further beds down some steps, next to the table tennis. There is a nice covered outdoor eating area, an outdoor kitchen, barbecue and wood fired pizza oven on on the same level as the main bedroom suite. The property is on a steep hill, with an off-road parking area above it which is much easier than the tricky access to the front entrance, but is quite a bit of effort when carrying shopping etc. Giovanni was a very helpful and responsive host, assisted by Adzim (apologies for any misspelling!) who emptied bins daily and was generally on hand for any issues. There are a few maintenance issues with the property which will continue to require attention, but this is a rustic property in a rural location and Giovanni & Adzim do their best to address any problems
Positiv: Direkte Kontaktaufnahme mit Vermieter via Email/Mobil möglich; tĂ€gliche Reinigung des Pools und Leerung der MĂŒllbehĂ€lter; ZitrusfrĂŒchte, Kaki, Quitten und KrĂ€uter zur freien Verwendung;
VerbesserungsfĂ€hig: Temperaturwahl der Waschmaschine defekt; LĂŒftung der Zimmer zwischen Mieterwechseln; Wegbeleuchtung zum oberen Parkplatz defekt
gemĂŒtliche Unterkunft mit allem was man braucht. Super Aussicht, schöner Pool, toll mit Schul-Kindern. Die KĂŒche war teilweise etwas schmutzig (ungewaschenes Geschirr im Schrank), was wohl an den Vormietern lag.
dirty, many cooking stuff not clean, dishwasher enable to do a complete cycle, air conditionning able to cool from 3 or 4 in the morning when cool enough outside, dogs barking all night, one night and day, swimming pool not as the picture as surounding has been redone with wood and give a strong sens of poor DIY results.
