Old town centre house; wine bar & cafes 50m, sea 30mins Pyrenees close

We bought our town house in old Céret because we wanted French café culture and access to mountains, sea and Spain. The street outside the house is pedestrianised and there’s a wine bar, a beautiful square with a fountain and a belting wood fire pizzeria and two other restaurants close by. Within a 5 min walk there are many other cafes and restaurants, a night bar, bakeries, an old church, chic little shops, a newsagent and a small supermarket. Barcelona is a 2hr drive; medieval Girona a 1hr drive. The nearest beach is only 30mins by car. Old Céret has narrow cobbled streets and wide boulevards lined with towering plane trees. It is an utterly charming place. The market on Saturday morning buzzes!
Ground floor – dining area and fully equipped kitchen. A spiral staircase leads to the top of the house. 1st floor double bedroom and newly fitted bathroom (walk-in shower, small bath, WC and wash basin). 2nd floor double bedroom and a 3rd bedroom with single beds. Shower and toilet. 3rd floor is a large airy living room (sejour) with French and velux windows. The sejour has a log fire, armchairs and TV etc. The TV allows you to watch French TV or Netflix using our subscription (no Britsh TV, Sorry).

More about Ceret: Céret has a warm and sunny climate, but in summer it can be extremely hot. The town, however, is the perfect place to shelter from the midday heat, as it is lined with plane trees which create a cool and pleasant atmosphere. The shops, cafes and bars along with the weekly Saturday market make up the life of Céret. There are communal dances, where people dance in a ring known as the Sardane. The dance looks deceptively slow and easy but the intricate footwork belies this. The Sardane festival is normally held in mid July. Céret also holds an annual bullfight weekend known as Ceret de Toros or Feria. There are bands and street bars (bodegas) and a party atmosphere. Young bulls are also run through the streets. The Feria will is normally held in the middle if July. The region around Céret is a major fruit producer, and in particular is famed for its cherries. Céret hosts a cherry festival each year (early May) with such oddities as cherry beer and a cherry stone spitting competition

More about local activities: In the early 20th century a cluster of painters, sculptors and ceramicists came to live and work in the area. Matisse and Modigliani visited. Pablo Picasso lived in Céret for a time and Café Pablo in the town is dedicated to him. Chaim Soutine, the Russian emigre painter, also lived in Céret and painted many landscapes of the village and its surrounds. Eventually this resulted in the establishment of a small but delightful Museum of Modern Art. Many donated some of their works to the Museum giving it a kick-start into the realm of great little art museums of Europe.
Piste skiing can found after a 2 hour car drive up the Tet valley and into the Cerdagne. There is a famous golf course at an altitude of 3500ft, near St Laurent de Cerdans and about 45mins away by car. There are spas at Amelie-les-Bains and Le Boulou (15 mins). Céret Sportive play rugby union on Sundays at an impressive local stadium (10 mins walk). And the walking opportunities are endless!

Our free starter pack: I’ll tell you what annoys me when I rent a holiday home. It’s finding 1 roll of paper per toilet, 2 dish washer tablets and 1 bin liner etc “to get the renter started”. Don’t know about you, but I don’t go on holiday to waste time shopping for such trivia. At our house you’ll find enough of the basics eg bin liners, detergents, toilet rolls etc for the whole week. We’ll leave you to buy the food and wine!
For adults there are music and film CDs, fiction books and board games including chess and scrabble. There is also a small collection of my walking guides and maps. I don’t care if you walk off with the fiction, but please respect my maps and walking guides!
There are small loudspeakers in the ground floor kitchen/dining room with a jack plug for connecting to your laptop, so you can listen to your Spotify / Apple Play music.
Lastly, about kids. There is a baby gate to avoid accidents on the spiral staircase, cot, highchair, changing mat, and a few toys.

PLEASE NOTE - Our living room (sejour) with TV is on the top floor of the house. There are some 40 stone steps to reach the sejour so the house is not really suitable for a disabled guest.

Charming and comfortable
We greatly enjoyed staying in such a well-equipped, comfortable house containing a wealth of material on the local area. The house is well situated in an interesting and historic town. Our host provided much detailed information for parking, arriving and enjoying the region. Strongly recommended.

A lovely well equipped property in the centre of a beautiful French town.
Great hosts with good communication prior to stay. Clean, very well equipped property full of character. 100m to boulongeries each morning was nice. Lovely eating opportunities in the square just around the corner with amazing market on Saturdays. Would stay here again.

A Warm Welcome in the Center of Ceret
This is our second time renting this property and we hope to return many more times. Let’s start with its location, which is perfect, right in the heart of town but still relatively free from the heavy foot traffic of the main roads. You are just steps from the Place dès Neuf Jets, a lively square with several restaurants and one of our favorite places to go in the evenings. Turn the other way out the door and you soon find your way to one of the main town roads that leads you to more cafes and shops. The house itself was a perfect size for our small family. The kitchen was well equipped and the bed and bathrooms had all you need for a pleasant stay. The owners are very helpful and communicative and provide useful information, both about the house and the region. We highly recommend this rental.

Fabulous place to escape the UK winter!
The house is exactly as described, very well equipped and in the centre of town. Sam and Maggi were brilliant at accommodating the every changing nature of the restrictions, and we were able to shift our dates easily. The instructions were helpful and the additional information about the area was excellent. The town is delightful and we enjoyed our whole 5 weeks there, and we were very sad to leave.

Outstanding property in a great central location!
Beautiful and spacious property with an excellent location in central Ceret. Very comfortable for our family of four (kids aged 6 and 10yrs). Bakery literally around the corner. Charcuterie, wine stores, restaurants and more just a couple of minutes walk from the front door. The top room has a great open layout with a nice wood stove. Perfect cozy location for playing games and reading on cool January evenings. The host was excellent and went above and beyond to help us make the most of our stay. This place is a gem!

Bustling little town
Letting ourselves in was simple and the directions given were very good. The house is big and very well appointed and there is sufficient of everything to see you through your stay, including herbs, spices, sugar etc. but it could have done with a good clearout as there was far too much stuff and no idea how old some of it was. It was lovely to be so close to shops and restaurants, but there is a price to pay, namely that these shops and restaurants need to be re-stocked every day, and they like to do these thing fairly early in the mornin . We were lucky we could get parked each day in the littlesquare a 50 metre walk from the apartment and all free. There is a good supply of supermarkets in the area as well, always useful for self catering. On Saturday there was a market which stretches across quite a few streets and the traders sold a lovely variety of stuff . All in all, it was a nice stay, but it was incredibly hot the week we were there (last week July) and it would have been nice to have airconditioning, at least in the bedrooms.

Centrally located house.
This house could not be in a better position. Its close to absolutely everything in the lovely town of Ceret. Downstairs is a beautiful kitchen diner which is well equipped and very cool to retreat to after the heat from outside. The bedrooms are lovely and each has a fax, much needed for our stay when they was a heatwave.

Cozy and Charming!
Staying in this charming four-story apartment - in the heart of this sweet little French town - enhanced the wonderful experience we had in Ceret. The winding greenery and lavender shutters on the outside were picture-perfect and standouts on the street. The kitchen was very well-equipped; and the winding stone stairways added to the authenticity. The master bath was large and comfortable, and the fab fourth-floor living room made us want to throw a party. we loved feeling like locals and would highly recommend this beautiful place!

Fantastic family holiday - enjoyed Ceret lifestyle and house is great
The house was an attraction in itself with many people taking photos - very pretty with flowering climbers and flowers at the windowsill. The house is equipped with everything you should need including much needed fans at night, every kitchen/dining utensil, Netflix which was great for the kids for films some evenings and a fab newly decorated bathroom and very easy to feel at home. It has 2 Boulangeries within a mins walk. We loved exploring the town in the evening and sampling beers and sangria in the local bars while listening to various live music. The house is in the centre of it all but down an alleyway that means it is quieter apart from when there is music in the bar opposite. A good excuse to try their tapas and beers! Our 3 children, aged 12, 14 and 18 enjoyed the pedalos at the lake at St Jean, the beach at Racou. We had a day trip to Gerona and collioure. The highlights were "easy" canyoning at Gorges de Galamus with Action Aventure and swimming at Duilhac sous Peyrepeteuse and an overnight stay in Carcassonne on our way back to Toulouse. Thankyou for a fab holiday and all the thought you gave with your recommendations and accommodating us with changing travel arrangements. We hope to be back some day.
