Cute Bungalow in NewRiver Gorge National Park(sleeps 6, pet friendly)
We named this house Mample's because it was my grandmothers weekend get away. She loved the New River and wanted her family and friends to have a place to get away when they could. I remember weekends playing in that front yard, just waiting on a train to go by so the engineer would blow his horn. The adults sitting on the porch watching us kids and enjoying the view of the River. Meadow Creek use to be a quaint little railroad town that has died off, with just residents and A LOT of good fishing and nostalgia. Mample's place sits right in the very heart of it. You can sit on the big front porch and look at the river behind what use to be a very busy store and watch what few trains that still go by. Use your imagination and you can be back in that little town visiting with the people on a Sunday afternoon. Or you can just get busy and FISH, Kayack, Canoe or hike Trails
We booked last minute on our way to NC and no issues. We were able to make a few home cooked meals while on the road and get a good nights rest. Very clean and comfortable.
We were in WV for a family reunion and were so excited to find a place that was within our budget and close to the reunion. We were even more pleased when we arrived and saw things. From the location and layout to its cleanliness and amenities - everything was great. Check-in was seamless and the property owner was super responsive and helpful. We liked it so much weâre considering another - longer - trip this fall!
The place was very comfortable and convenient to New River Gorge. Appreciated very much the ability to have our dogs stay with us. The dogs enjoyed the fenced in yard.
My husband and I had a 4 day weekend for Veterans day. We decided to take the Bridge Walk and explore some of the old coal towns in Nutallburg and Therman.
I booked this in a rush and did not read the reviews so we were surprised to learn that many trains pass RIGHT in front of the house and they blow LOUD horns right in front of you, including throughout the night. We were, however, like other guests reported, soothed right back to sleep by the sound of the train after the whistles blew the first night and we slept right through them the second night. We loved the Adirondack chairs on the porch as we sat and listened to the river. The bed was comfortable and we had everything we needed - but bring your own coffee if you need it in the morning.
Everything great except we had added a day to our reservation thru VRBO and paid but they didnât let the local host know. They said I had checked out at 5 am when I still had another night. I received hateful messages from VRBO and the local host and the state police while out sightseeing. Phone calls and texts got it corrected
Home is older with a great front porch to sit and talk the day and nights away. House property is not directly on the river but that wasnât important to us. Some nights had more trains than others. That didnât bother us. Paint chips dropping from the ceiling did. It was an overall relaxing stay for 3 elderly sisters.
Property was as described, older cottage and clean. In a very quiet neighborhood up the road from the National Park Sandstone Visitors Center. There was quite a bit of train activity, up to 6 passes in the middle of the night. We knew about it from other reviews and it didnât really bother us. We woke up and fell back asleep.
The house was old and has character. The train is loud as others have stated. You can walk right down to the river which is cool and we saw river otter tracks. Easy drive to West Virginia Adventures for rafting (about 40 mins). Drive through the lower portion of New River Gorge NP to get to the house. The host provided the correct address but VRBO has the house number wrong so that should be corrected to avoid confusion. Fenced yard great for pets and children. Beds were comfy and we enjoyed our stay.
The property was great and the view and closeness to the river was wonderful! Would recommend this location to anyone wanting a cozy and quiet time in New river gorge!
Very rustic cottage, but clean and comfortable. I really appreciated the cottage's character (the beadboard walls and metal cabinets). The location was perfectly close to the national park and the highway which made traveling to other parts of the national park easy. My kids slept through the train and enjoyed seeing it pass during the day. I deducted a star because I didn't receive the check -in information prior to arrival.
We had a cozy stay in this house. My mother in law (from SC) described it as "authentic Appalachian living". :) It's not super fancy, and the train does come by multiple times at night, but that, in itself, was kind of a cool experience that you don't get everyday. We went down to the river for paddle boarding in the evenings and were hiking around New River Gorge in the day. It was a lovely trip with great memories made. Thanks for letting us stay.
The little house was exactly as described. It was very cute, spacious and comfortable. The bed was super comfortable and Iâm picky about my bed! The train tracks are VERY close, but we enjoyed watching the trains go by. There were about 3 per night. The horns woke us but we were lulled back to sleep by the sound of the trains. The kitchen was well equipped but I suggest you bring your own spices if you plan to cook. The area is gorgeous and we were able to hike many trails throughout the park. Everyone we encountered was very nice. I would definitely come back again.
We enjoyed our stay along the New River Gorge in Meadow Creek. The bungalow was kept simple with furnishings. The beaded ceiling molding for the walls and the ceiling with the massive baseboards are classic for the era it was built. The updated tub/shower and furnishings made it very comfortable.
We enjoyed the trains as they came by. The distant rumble and blowing horns as they passed made it seem like a bygone era.
It is a comfortable neighborhood. The mountains surround the town and the river is able to be seen from the front porch, and only a short walk to touch the water.
We enjoy the New River Gorge era and this was a pleasant spot to base from for the southern area.
As soon as we walked through the door we were impressed with the home! It was so welcoming and warm! We spent 20 mins admiring all the different decorations! The bed were clean and comfy, as well as the rest of the house. The only thing we were surprised about were the trains that came through but we enjoyed watching them every time we heard the rumble. We will definitely be back for another visit!!
Our family of 3 and our dog stayed 2 nights on our way from NJ to TN, allowing us to explore New River Gorge National Park. We arrived after dark, and had a hard time finding the property, as there was a slight discrepancy between the house number in the property listing and the address in the message we received with check-in info prior to our arrival. The GPS routed us to the rear of the property, which was where the street sign appeared to be located. Only by driving over the train tracks toward the river and doubling back were we able to see the front of the house/house number as shown in the listing. And it is very, very close to the train tracks! My husband and I slept in the bedroom in the front of the house, and the freight train woke us several times per night. The train was also loud enough to wake our daughter in the rear bedroom despite her sound machine being on at a high volume. But for us, the benefits of the home outweighed the inconvenience of the train noise. The house was recently updated, clean and the fenced in yard was great for our pup to run and play. The small town of Meadow Creek gave us a real feel for the area, as well as it's history, as several historical buildings in town are still standing despite no longer being used. We were so close to the N.R.G.N.P. Sandstone Falls visitor center, and having lodging within the Park allowed us to maximize the little time we had there! Thank you for having us!
There is lots of nature to enjoy at this house. itâs a great house to bring your family including the dogs. The train is really close but that was part of the charm for us. Keep in mind it is loud and it does roll by quite a few times a day.
