The home and grounds are absolutely beautiful. The home was very clean and well appointed, having everything we needed. Sally, the owner/host is the kindest person who really looked after us. She provided us with contacts for drivers, tour guides, and even a chef. She even made dining reservations for us. I had asked for a recommendation for bakery where I could order a special occasion cake. She gave a couple options, and then picked up my order for me. Her attention to detail is superb and she went above and beyond in so many ways. We would definitely stay there again if we are ever back in Scotland.

Scottish Return

We traveled around the Edinburgh, N Berwick and even saw the lovely Hawick. Sally’s home is amazing. So well appointed, stylish, comfortable and convenient for all kinds of activities. From walking to Dalkeith, traveling to the coast for golf or a day visit to Edinburgh, you cannot beat the location. 6 of us were accommodated comfortably in style. Already planning our return. It’s not just a house; Sally and her local knowledge is top notch. So helpful and insightful. The visit would not be complete, however, without the great help of Wilbur. The best driver a family could ask for. Sally’s referral proved to be a home run. Wilbur is a unique combination of wisdom, self deprecating humor and Scottish history. We loved our first return to Scotland since my great grandmother left to the States. Craick all round.

Our group of 10 family and friends stayed at the Olde Millhouse for 7 nights. The house is even more amazing than the photos with every comfort you could want, and the grounds were a delightful surprise! The meticulously kept landscape includes a creek and waterfall which delighted the grandchildren, as did the puppies (William and Fleur) and the hens - fresh eggs everyday! The house is better equipped than my own, and if you need anything, Sally will get it for you! Sally is the perfect host, one step ahead of all our needs. When our group's arrival plans got turned upside down, she sorted it all out and got us settled in without a hitch. She is super helpful, gracious with a delightful sense of humor who went above and beyond to make our visit unforgettable. Our plans included a special dinner prepared by Jesse who sought out our preferences ahead of our visit, and prepared a wonderful meal. The location of the house is perfect as a home base to explore Edinburgh, North Berwick and the Highlands. Dalkeith offers several local dining options which we happily sampled. The Olde Millhouse gets our highest recommendation. My family will be talking about this vacation for years to come, and would absolutely stay there again. Sally, thank you for everything!

The Old Mill House

The Old Mill House is a gorgeous house and property. Sally the owner is a delight. She gave suggestions and helped us book other activities (fly fishing lesson for son and grandson). She suggested golf courses, day trips and restaurants. We were a family of 10 and we all loved the experience.

A beautiful idyll 


It is rare when a property that you research and select online meets virtually all of the benchmarks, but Sally’s property is not only beautiful and comfortable, but the service level is beyond compare. Having a small child with us as a family, we wanted a place that addressed her needs while also being appropriate for the adults in the room and the home did that and so much more! We were close to parks, golf courses, the grocery when needed, and close enough to the city of Edinburgh that we were able to take advantage of Sally’s in-house driver to see a concert and sightsee easily. We also took full advantage of Sally’s chef (and bagpiper;) for a daughter’s landmark birthday celebration. We couldn't have enjoyed ourselves any more than we did!;)

Amazing home and property in lovely Dalkeith Scotland!

My family and I recently visited the Old Millhouse in June. We couldn’t have been happier with our choice to stay here. The host Sally couldn’t have been more helpful in planning our stay and was always accessible to help us in anyway she could. Wilbur our driver for the week was always reliable and quite the character. Sally put together various outings for us, to North Bewick, Hawicke and a day at St. Andrew’s with her tour guide Darren who was great. We did two dinners in with meals prepared by chef Jesse and they were both delicious. The home itself is rich in history and lovingly decorated from Sally’s numerous travels. The property is so serene you never want to leave. In all a dream property for a perfect Scottish getaway

Amazing Location, Property, and Host

The OldMill House was everything depicted in the VRBO listing ... and more. The property was one of a kind - a country estate just 20 minutes from the Edinburgh city center. The property itself is stunning from the grounds to the architecture to the decorating and art inside the house. Every detail was attended to and our family felt super comfortable the entire week we were in Dalkeith. Everything was well supplied - the kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, even wood for the fireplace. And, we thoroughly enjoyed working with Sally who promptly replied to every question asked before and during our stay, who was on site to welcome us and show us around the house, who assisted us with travel recommendations, transport, and dining recommendations. There is a reason why this is a top rental property in all of Scotland. We can't wait to visit this lovely home again!

The fabulous Old Millhouse

My family of 7, including our one year old granddaughter, stayed in the Old Millhouse for 5 nights. The house is even more beautiful in person than in the photos. Everything is top notch from kitchen appliances and utensils, to comfy bedding, linens and toiletries. The decor is absolutely lovely. Sally, our host, was super helpful and responsive and just lovely. We hired personal chef Jesse to prepare our dinner upon arrival and it was one of our best parts of the entire trip! The huge, private grounds are stunning and Sally's dogs, William and Fleur, charmed us with their good manners and adorableness. The house location was a great jumping off spot for visiting Edinburgh, North Berwick and sites to the north as well. We had a beautiful family vacation at the Old Millhouse and would 100% stay there again and again.

Week stay for Junior World Golf Tournament

We found the property online. We traveled with 4 adults and 2 children. The house was modern and spacious. The grounds were amazing and plenty of room for large parties to spread out. The highlight of the propertyis Sally who owns and manages the property. She was our concierge for the week and can arrange golf, private chefs and transportation. Very beautiful property

The house is as beautiful as it looks online. The location is quiet and pretty, but not super convenient to Edinburgh. The biggest problem was privacy. The landlord would come into our rooms while we were gone to close windows, which is fair, but she could have just asked us to close them before leaving. Once, while someone was in the house, she came in unannounced again. It was uncomfortable. Otherwise a very pleasant stay.

Our family had an amazing stay at the The Old Millhouse. A stunning property located just minutes from Edinburgh and decorated to perfection. The house and property are stunning. It is it’s own oasis which I cannot recommend more! Johanne was helpful and responsive in the booking process and checking in was as easy as it comes. If you stay, use Wilbur’s services! He was funny and sweet, and made getting around effortless. So happy to have found this listing on vrbo!

Lovely stay

We had a lovely stay - the house is beautiful and very nicely furnished, and the kitchen is well stocked with essentials and cooking utensils. The property is gorgeous and location was perfect - nice and quiet but a quick trip into Edinburgh. Would definitely stay there again if we are ever back in the area!

Family get together

We had the most wonderful stay at Old Mill House. The kitchen was incredibly well equipped for catering for 9 of us and we all loved the swim spa and outdoor space.

Perfect for a family weekend

I would highly recommend The Old Millhouse. We had a lovely family holiday there. The house and grounds are stunning. Johanne was really quick to respond to all my questions and we loved having Liz come and cook for us one evening.

Dreamy property!

We had an absolutely WONDERFUL stay at this beautiful home! Johanne was more helpful than I could have imagined: we communicated with her before, during, and after our trip and she answered a myriad of our questions, accepted and put away groceries we had ordered prior to our arrival, was a wealth of information about the city and things to do with our family, and was a lovely hostess indeed:) The home is beautiful and it accommodated all seven of our family members very comfortably. My kids loved getting eggs from the chickens each day and exploring the grounds. The swimspa was a luxurious and relaxing way to end the day. We would highly recommend the Old Millhouse to anyone visiting Dalkeith!

Exquisite property with plenty of space

Really could not have asked for a better experience. Johanne was so accommodating and really made the entire experience so pleasant. The hot tub was great, the gardens and grounds were exquisite, and the bedrooms were so comfortable. Would stay here again without a doubt!

Ladies getaway

Great getaway for a group of friends. All queries answered before arrival. Private catering one evening excellent and minibus into Edinburgh great value. One minor point is 2 bedrooms on 3rd floor quite a bit smaller but we drew lots to make it fair.

My best VRBO experience by far.

The house and property are beautiful, and the property manager was absolutely amazing. She suggested activities, arranged anything we wanted, actually picked up groceries for us and made sure we were happy. We will definitely go back.

Fabulous stay!

It’s wonderful when a holiday property surpasses your expectations and this one certainly did! The house was immaculately clean and beautifully furnished throughout. The grounds are lovely and the swim-spa was such fun. Sally and Patrick were so kind and responsive throughout. There were some lovely touches such as the welcome basket with local delicacies, the fresh milk and orange juice deliveries on the doorstep and the chicken coop where we were able to gather our own eggs (which the children loved!). We were particularly blessed by the weather but the house is the perfect launching off pad to explore the delights of the city, the beaches (the Lobster Shack at North Berwick was a highlight!) and walks in the hills. The Restoration Yard restaurant/shop was another surprise - a wonderful place to visit. Thanks again Sally and Patrick and we hope to stay again sometime!

Great house and a great location

We came for my sons 30th birthday and had a great time the house is.beautiful and the grounds are amazing. The owners help make our stay perfect by helping us with local activity’s we had archery in the garden and also a chef came and cooked dinner for us was an amazing experience would recommend this to anyone. And if you’re lucky enough to meet Patrick and Terry what lovely people they are. Regards Jeff
