How to describe Wen Pin? It seems like it really wants to be comfortable, classy, old fashioned hotel, but doesn’t quite succeed in doing so. I booked it because it was the highest rated hotel within my budget. However I also booked a hotel in Taipei for a similar price which was much nicer.
It has an excellent location, one block from the KMRT and a few blocks from the ferry to Qijin. The rooms and lobby are decked out with old style European furniture.
I had some trouble checking in because I had changed my reservation, but they were ultimately able to sort it out. The rooms are mostly clean and quite large but the building is noticeably aged, and there is a faint musty smell in the air (but it is not very noticeable). The shower is ok but the head is quite low and it’s in a bathtub with a shower curtain rather than a door. There is free Wi-fi but it seems somewhat slow, I got faster speeds tethering my computer to my phone.
Ultimately, your experience here comes down to your expectations. Those with high expectations should stay somewhere else, those with low expectations will have them exceeded. As for me, I think next time I’ll be willing to pay a little more to stay somewhere else.
