Kinsale quayside Kinsale hosts an annual jazz festival, which takes place during the last weekend of October. Pubs and hotels in the town host concerts by jazz and blues groups throughout the weekend, including on the last Monday of October (which is a bank holiday in Ireland).[34][35]
The monumental steel, originally unpainted, sculpture The Great Wall of Kinsale, by Eilis O'Connell and installed in 1988 to celebrate Kinsale's achievements in the Tidy Towns competition, stands by Pier Road and Town Park.[36]
Bastion, a restaurant on Market/Main streets, received a Michelin Star in 2020.[4] Chef Keith Floyd was previously a resident of Kinsale.[37]
Kinsale is a holiday destination for both Irish and overseas tourists.[2] Leisure activities include yachting, sea angling, and golf. The town also has several art galleries, and there is a large yachting marina close to the town centre.
The town is known for its restaurants,[3] including the Michelin-starred Bastion restaurant,[4] and holds a number of annual gourmet food festivals.[5]
Historical buildings in the town include St. Multose's Church (Church of Ireland) of 1190, St. John the Baptist (Catholic) of 1839, the Market House of c.â1600, and the so-called French Prison (or Desmond Castle, associated with the Earls of Desmond) of c.â1500. Charles Fort, a partly restored star fort of 1677, is in nearby Summercove.[6]
Kinsale, County Cork is all about scenery, stories and surprises. let's start with the surprises, Kinsale is hopping like no place else in Ireland in the cool of an Irish spring. The town is busy with locals and tourists alike, with many French, recently arrived overnight from Roscoff giving a well dressed look, to an already well heeled and presented town. Steeped in stories, the defeat of the Irish in the Battle of Kinsale 1601 changed the course of Irish history forever with the Flight of the Earls (the old order of Irish chieftains) and the arrival of the British planters. But, long before even that event, it was an important trading port on the route to the new world. Landmark taverns and the Dutch style courthouse, where the inquest into the sinking of the Luistania in 1915 was held as well as medieval Desmond Castle still survive as do most of the other character houses in and around the narrow maze of streets that thankfully have not been demolished in the name of progress or greed.... Kinsale thrives on its waterfront location, the galleons which once sailed right up town have been replaced with leisure craft for both sailing and fishing. The Kinsale regatta is one of the longest running in Ireland and as popular as ever. Thirty years ago, Kinsale pioneered the Slow Food Movement with local artisan food producers getting together with chefs to produce the most wonderful food. In fact there seems to be more bars, restaurants and cafes per square mile here than in Dublin and as I say its busy, busy, busy. But the people are warm and friendly and for the most characters like Martin Shanahan whoâs mad about fish and is leading a nationwide campaign to get us all back cooking and eating it. You will spoiled for choice restaurant wise and there is certainly somewhere to suit all tastes and pockets. A great weekend destination or starting point on a scenic road trip around West Cork.... 10 Other Things To Do and See in and around Kinsale.....
1 First up Dermot Ryanâs walking tour of Kinsale is a must, tailor made, instantly, to suit the interests and nationalities of the various individuals who show up on the day. Warm, witty and informative, itâs the best âŹ5 you will spend in Kinsale, tour departs daily at 10.30 from the Tourist Office on the quay and takes about an hour.
2 In these days of online everything is there anything better when on holidays than browsing a real bookshop rather than a virtual one and having a book talk to you or fall into your hands as well as a chat with the owner of the Kinsale Book Shop whoâll advise you on the latest arrivals re Irish interest or just a downright, good old-fashioned read, as well as the state of the industry!
3 Followed by coffee and the best lemon meringue pie in Ireland at the Lemon Leaf or a real hot chocolate in Joâs. I must say I like this kind of niche marketing, it certainly adds to the relaxation element of a pleasant saturday morning shop when my stomach nods in agreement without even having to bother my mind.
4 The Boathouse Gallery with an electic selection of sea inspired images, I particularly liked but couldnât afford, as usual, the Dee Pieters landscapes of West Cork with their mirror like water elements and bottomless lakes. With a warm Cork welcome from the owner, who knows well you are only browsing and unlikely to buy, well not this time perhaps, but maybe next time?
5 And then there are the stalwarts like Jim Edwards, the Blue Haven and the Spaniard out the road, that have been there forever. Thereâs a great line up of music most nights throughout the summer, good food and perfect pints all day and plenty of atmosphere all with walking distance of each other.
6 And no shortage of restaurants obviously in the Gourmet Capital of Ireland, cheap and cheerful Crackpots and Brunos to more expensive Finns Table and Fishy Fishy with the Black Pig doing tapas but my absolute favourite is up next?
7 Bulman Pub, Summercove, never was a place more aptly named, location? tick! sunset, if you are lucky? tick! atmosphere? most definitely! great pints, cold beer or glass of wine? for sure! And the best oysters, lobster and seafood you will eat anywhere in Ireland.
8 Charles Fort, after the defeat of the Irish in 1601 the English built this French style star shaped fort at the mouth of the harbour and installed a garrison of over 1000 troops which remained in Kinsale for over 400 years until we got our independence in1922. You can visit by car or on foot, a nice walk out via Scilly, take a Harbour Cruise or Hire a Boat during the summer.
9 Old Head, Kinsale, known as the 'Edge of the Worldâ at the time, it still looks like that, a rugged peninsula, jutting out 3 miles out into the Atlantic with its famous lighthouse and Celtic marriage stone. It now belongs to private consortium who have developed a world class links and exclusive golf club which is on every golfers bucket list of courses to play before they die All guests are advised to take out travel insurance , incase you need to cancel your booking for unseen reasons , or for damages done at the property during your stay , this is optional of course and is down to the person making the booking.b
Fantastic group house. We had 10 - all family members. The location is great and the esthetic of the house is very nice! Open and modern. The outdoors is lovely and the games and spaces to play with the kids are well thought out. I think it is popular as it is starting to show signs of wear and tear. Could use a bit of tlc and a deep cleaning. Overall very nice.
Everything was where Ryan said it would be. Beautiful home with great views. We were just four golfers but can easily accommodate so many more people comfortably. Very enjoyable stay.
The home is beautiful, situated just a few miles from the center of Kinsale. The ad for the home states that it sleeps 20, but has only 6 bedrroms and 3 bathrooms. We paid for 16 people, only had 14 people actually staying there(thank goodness), had to have people sleep on couches because the cot we were left were of very poor quality. Had to purchase 100 euros worth of towels because the owner provides 1 towel per person, and zero face towels! And there is no clothes dryer, so if you want to have clean clothing you had to wash the clothes in a tiny washing maching that sounded like it was going to explode every time we ran it, and then hang the clothes out to dry. Ireland is a beautiful country, Kinsale is a beautiful town, but it rains almost every day, so getting the clothes dry was quite a challenge. We left the propertythree days early just so we could find clean, dry towels and a hot shower. And a property advertising "sleeps 20" had enough hot water for maybe 10 people. So many times you ended up taking a cold shower. I would never stay at this place again, and would never recommend anyone stay there.
We came to Kinsale for a wedding, and the property did not disappoint. It was stunningly beautiful. Lots of room, clean and accommodated our family perfectly. Loved it!
The house offered some fun extras, like ping pong & a trampoline. We were nine adults, three generations and everyone found activities they enjoyed. The location of the house overlooking the water with spectacular sunsets was tranquil. The only limitation was in the pantry: no staples as every other rental on this two week trip provided salt, pepper, coffee, tea bags at a minimum.
The house is sited on a hill overlooking the water and harbor of Kinsale. It is a large property, plenty of room for kids to enjoy the outside. The house is comfortable and spacious. The house could use a few things to make a stay easier. Figuring out the appliances and washer is a task. The instruction books have been shredded to some degree over the years, and it took far too long to figure out the different appliances. Some laminated simplified instructions would save alot of hassle. The house had so salt/pepper/sugar, basics that anyone would want to use in a kitchen. These are normal things in any house I've rented before. In addition, no tiny shampoo containers in the showers, and one of the three showers didn't drain, so was out of commission for the visit. Each person got one small towel to use. The house is great, the views sublime, and if there were just a few amenities it would help a lot.
We had an amazing stay at âMarina Viewsâ, it was perfect for the nine of us. Lots of space. Very well set up, clean and welcoming.
The owner was quick to respond to us. The views were spectacular and the property was beautiful.
The beds were all comfortable and had lovely linens. We loved sitting in the gazebo, looking over the river having coffee in the morning.
I really canât say enough good things about this house and would highly recommend it especially if you are a large group.
This property is truly stunning. You cannot beat the amazing views. This house has everything you could want. plenty of space, great kitchen and lots of outdoor space to enjoy. Very short drive to town.
It is the small stuff that matters. Gorgeous home and setting is beautiful but be prepared for the bare minimal onlyâŠbut you canât be mad at the listing bc it warns you! Just no toiletries, washcloths, salt and pepper, etc so consider yourself warned! Otherwise clean and no complaints!
The view from this property was spectacular! The location was very close to the village of Kinsale. We never heard from property manager to check on our experience. The sliders in dining area were not attached so they fell off when opened. There were 13 of us and there was exactly 13 towels. That was inconvenient to say the least. The cots were uncomfortable and there was short supply of blankets and sheets.
We absolutely loved the house. The pictures don't actually do it justice and waking up to those views, yes please. It was only a couple of minutes drive to the heart of kinsale for the shops etc.. kitchen was fully equipped. Place was immaculate. Games room was a big hit with us. The only one tiny negative is that we ran out of toilet paper on our 2nd evening so it would have been handy to have had more there (maybe there was but we looked and couldn't find it ) we were after a few drinks so couldn't go to the shops. So just a tip to the landlord to maybe leave more in the house for 12 guests but couldn't fault anything else. Were looking forward to returning.
The perfect location, accommodation and setting especially for the year that is in it. You do not need to leave the house and itâs surroundings to enjoy a holiday here.
The house was spotless and very comfortable.
Enjoyed every moment at Marina Views!
we stayed at this house with my 5 friends. what an absolutely beautiful house. The view of this house is everything. very clean and very easy to check-in. the beds are very comfortable. just one thing annoyed us that when to check out cleaners were at the property for 10.45 am when we are allowed to check out at 11 am. we had to rush out the house to check out as cleaners were annoyed they had to wait outside. but its something small. Overall we really enjoyed staying in the house.
