Seashell Cottage in La Jolla

Tastefully decorated in sea-inspired hues, Seashell Cottage is a classic California bungalow featuring hardwood floors and timeless coastal charm. Located in a peaceful Windansea Beach neighborhood, this private vacation home offers a relaxing and soothing retreat just steps from the ocean. Enter through the welcoming enclosed front porch into a spacious living room filled with natural light, comfortable furnishings, and ocean-inspired dĂ©cor. French doors open to the patio, while the adjacent dining room seats six beneath a charming chandelier. The fully equipped kitchen includes a gas range, dishwasher, and everything needed for home-cooked meals. A laundry room with washer and dryer is conveniently located just off the kitchen with access to the backyard. This home features 3 bedrooms—2 queen bedrooms and a third bedroom with 2 twin beds—along with 1.5 bathrooms. All bedrooms are styled in calming coastal tones with luxury bedding for a restful stay. Step outside to a private fenced backyard designed for relaxation and entertaining, complete with a BBQ grill, outdoor dining for six, lounge seating, and an umbrella for shade surrounded by lush landscaping. Beach essentials including chairs and towels are provided. Parking is street parking only, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note there is no A/C; fans and heaters are provided for comfort. This home is located in a quiet neighborhood and is only suitable for quieter groups. Our rental agreement includes a no tolerance policy regarding excessive noise, occupancy and/or parties. Please make sure you are comfortable with these policies before renting.

The property is old but it was very clean and decorated really cute. I wish the old windows were a little easier to open since there is no air conditioning and it did get hot and humid during the day and a bit musty smelling. Other than that, it was in a great location next to restaurants/shops and the beach. Overall, it worked out well for our young family.

the area was safe and a short walk to shops, restaurants, stores etc. House is older, cute and charming. There was a musty smell throughout the house in case that bothers you (we just opened all the windows to air it out and it was fine :)

The location is great, walking distance to so many restaurants and coffee shops. I felt safe staying on the property. It was a 5 min walk to the beach. Overall it’s a good place, but it is definitely warn down. For the price per night, I’d expect more care put into the appearance in the house, example cracks are in multiple places, paint chips, mirrors are all at a very awkward and high height. If you’re looking for something more “budget” friendly and in a great location for both walking and a short drive into town, I’d recommend.

Great location just a few minutes walk from the beach, and we made use of the multiple provided beach towels. The house had everything we need for a small family getaway to La Jolla. It’s an older house, but has been well maintained. Like many houses in the area, there is not dedicated parking, but we never had to park more than a block away, and usually found a spot within 100 feet. There are plenty of good food options in the area, some in walking distance.

The review

The property is older than it appears in the photos. The property needs a face lift at its price point. Chipped paint throughout, water damaged ceiling in some spots. No locks on bedrooms or bathrooms. Rear entry with no security bolt. One of the comforters had a stain on it. Not enough towels for 6 people. Great location though, easy access, walking to nearby stores was easy for grocery needs. street parking but was not an issue for us. It got busier in evening with locals parking to go surf. Some of the dishes were dirty or stained. Lastly cable did not work on the main TV, there was no Roku attached. Not sure what remotes went to which TV. The Roku didn’t work in the bedrooms, not sure about cable as we attached our laptop to the HDMI. There was a DVD player but no selection of movies at like other places.

Great location

Easy to walk to the beach and La Jolla stores and restaurants. Quiet and safe neighborhood. The house is old and could have been cleaner. The floors and dishes were dirty and the half bathroom toilet keeps flushing. Also the bedroom door with the half bathroom is jammed and can’t be fully closed.

Horrible property. Do not stay here. Save your money.

This home is old, dirty and unsafe. The entire residence is shabby at best and it feels very unsafe. We booked two night and left after five minutes. My girls and I did not feel safe there. Do not waste your money on this horrendous rental.

Nice place

A little warm. Not great air flow. Great location. Needs a little interior up keep. Bathroom door very difficult to close without a loud slam. Not a problem but we had a new born with us. Location is very good. Parking is not good. Easy to get in and checkout was very easy.

This property is much older than the pictures show. There was pet hair and stains on many of the outdoor cushions and inside furniture. Also there is not any air conditioning.

Could not access

There was no access provided to the property. Attempts to gain access from the property management company were not fulfilled timely. Keys/lockbox were empty. Property pictures were not accurate, notably in the back area. Furniture was very worn and dirty, the overhead gazebo structure was broken. We are due a full refund for not being able to stay and needing to book another property for the night. VRBO and the property manager are being very difficult.

We recently stayed at the cottage for a wedding. We had our adult children and another guest. The house was a comfortable size and the location was perfect. We could go for walks to the beach, walk into town and on Sunday there was a local farmers market that we walked to! The beds are comfy and for the most part the house was clean. As stated in other reviews, you may want to bring slippers or flip flops as the floors are old and leave your feet a bit dirty. When we arrived the mirror in the half bath was missing and the shower curtain liner was a bit mildewed. The management got there within a couple hours to replace both. There is no air but plenty of fans and with windows open at night there was a decent cross breeze. The neighborhood was quiet so that was not an issue. We did have some dampness, being there during the hurricane, but once the sun came out the house dried right out. Just a note, after reading other reviews we did bring extra face clothes (two are provided) and large shampoo. All in all it was a good experience.

Pleasant stay but could have been better

We had an overall good experience and stay at this property. The location is nice for walking downtown and to the beach. The things you should be aware of: -House gets very warm and windows are challenging to open and some windows didn’t have screens. -BARE essentials were provided. Literally two rolls of toilet paper, and three miniature bars of soap. Be prepared to make a run to Pavilions. -The one hand towel provided in the entire home was a bath mat. No washcloths and only five bath towels. No beach towels. -It was nice to have a washer dryer, but be prepared to purchase detergent. -Twin beds and the bed frames they are on are extremely squeaky. -The backyard wasn’t the oasis we expected. It was overgrown and run down. We wouldn’t stay here again.

Old and Drab

This place has so much potential. The location was good close to the beach and town but on a quieter street but was such a disappointment. I chose this because of the wonderful pictures of the backyard- It was nothing like the pictures. It was dirty and unwelcoming. There was a ripped cover over the seating and the grill didnt work- We ended up pulling lawn chairs int he front lawn to read. Inside was dark and drab and needs a good can of paint. The bathroom was dirty with mold in the shower. I called property management several times on multiple issues which is not local and they were very nice but nobody ever followed through. I asked for someone to clean the shower- they said they would and never showed and that was the same for every issue, I am not a high maintenance person and dont have very high expectations, but this was not what I expected for the amount of money they charged. They gave you one little (travel size soap for the week and 2 rolls of toilet paper) beach chairs dirty and ripped. Ive really never experienced a rental with such lack of thought.
