Churchill Country Retreat offers guests the rare opportunity to stay in a home with deep heritage and timeless charm. Built as a country retreat from the city, it now welcomes guests to experience the same tranquillity and beauty that once drew the Churchill family to the rolling landscapes of East Sussex, situated close to the village of North Chailey, near Lewes.

Today, Churchill Retreat blends history with modern comfort, providing the perfect escape for families, groups, or special gatherings. Sleeping up to 11 guests across six individually styled bedrooms, the home combines elegance and warmth. Each room carries a unique theme, with cosy window seats for quiet reading. The master suite boasts a walk-in wardrobe and a luxurious ensuite bathroom with a statement bathtub designed for relaxation. The heart of the home is a spacious country-style kitchen, fully equipped with modern appliances perfect for preparing shared meals. Expansive living areas and grounds offer space for both lively gatherings and peaceful moments, including a swimming pool, hot tub, jacuzzi spa, with plenty of room for everyone to feel at home and free Wi-Fi for streaming all your favourite shows on the Smart TV.

Whether you’re strolling through the grounds, lounging beside the pool, or gazing across the countryside with a glass of wine in hand, Churchill Country Retreat offers more than a place to stay – it’s an escape into the beauty and calm of rural Sussex. The Churchill Family had strong ties to the Sussex countryside, favouring it as a place of retreat and reflection. Situated just a short distance from North Chailey near Lewes, where he balanced family life with moments of solitude away from political pressures. The landscapes of East Sussex, with their rolling fields, woodlands, and historic villages, became settings he cherished for their tranquillity and inspiration. Staying at Churchill Country Retreat allows guests to experience the same peaceful countryside that once offered comfort and respite to the Churchill Family.

KITCHEN / LIVING AREA
This home offers spacious areas, a fully equipped kitchen with modern amenities including two AGA ovens with electric oven and hob module, kettle, toaster and microwave, plus plenty of cookware, glassware, crockery and cutlery so you can easily cook up a family meal for everybody. In addition to this, we offer complimentary tea and coffee, salt and pepper - so please help yourself. The dining table seats up to 10 guests with additional chairs available. You’ll find the sociable and light living room set up with a Smart TV, making it a lovely space for chilling out, getting together for a few drinks or catching up on the events of the day. If you prefer, you can simply relax and watch a movie on the TV or find your own quiet space in the further sitting rooms. There is a separate utility room with a washing machine, tumble dryer and vacuum for guests to use.

POOL AND OUTDOOR ENTERTAINMENT AREA
Step straight from the living area into your own private outdoor retreat, featuring a stunning Art Deco-inspired swimming pool, hot tub jacuzzi spa, sun loungers and a spacious garden designed for relaxation and fun. Beyond the gated pool area, children can enjoy the climbing frame while adults unwind on the landscaped lawn or soak up the peaceful countryside surroundings.
For your convenience, one pool towel is provided per guest, and plastic glassware is supplied for outdoor use, as glass is not permitted in the pool area.

HOT TUB JACUZZI SPA
The jacuzzi is heated from 7 pm on your arrival day and typically takes around 4 hours to reach temperature.
Plastic glassware is provided for outdoor use, as no glass is permitted in or around the jacuzzi.

SWIMMING POOL INFORMATION
-The pool is available year-round.
-16th September - 31st May: The pool remains open but is unheated and can be very cold during the winter months.
-1st June - 15th September: Pool heating is available on request for an additional charge.
-FREE pool heating is included for stays of 7 nights or more.
-Please request pool heating at least 7 days before arrival. When heated, the pool is typically maintained between 19°C and 25°C, subject to weather conditions.

PARKING
The property offers generous on-site parking, comfortably accommodating 4–5 vehicles.

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE
-Winding staircases connect the different levels within the house, so it may be difficult to access some of the bedrooms for those with limited mobility
-Some exit doors remain permanently locked for health and safety reasons, and keys are not provided. Please look out for signage on each door for guidance.
-Partial air conditioning is available in some rooms of the home.

Churchill Country Retreat is an ideal base for exploring Ashdown Forest or visiting Glyndebourne. Once a cart barn on a well-established fruit farm, this charming conversion blends characterful beams with floor-to-ceiling windows, creating a bright, homely and welcoming space. Nestled on the edge of Chailey Nature Reserve, it offers a peaceful countryside escape with attractions all within roughly 0–20 miles. Enjoy miles of public footpaths right from your doorstep, with regular wildlife sightings along the private drive, and a scenic walk across the fields to The Sloop Inn. Within a few miles, you’ll find Butterbox Farm, the Bluebell Railway, Sheffield Park Gardens, Bluebell Vineyard and Trading Boundaries for live music and dining. A little further afield, explore Ashdown Forest, Borde Hill Gardens, Wakehurst, Glyndebourne and the historic town of Lewes. For days out, Brighton and Eastbourne beaches, Drusillas Zoo, Knockhatch Adventure Park, and heritage spots like Hever Castle and Chartwell are all within easy reach. A perfectly placed countryside base for walking, relaxing, and discovering the best of Sussex.

-Late check-out fee - £100+VAT per half hour unless a late check-out has been agreed upon in advance
-There is a Travel Cot and a High Chair available in the house for guests to use free of charge.
-Not returning keys to key safe £200+VAT.
-A £95 cleaning fee per furry friend applies per stay, maximum 2 pets allowed.
-No Pool Heating Available (16th September – 31st May) During the cooler months, the pool is available for swimming but will not be heated. With the British weather and the size of the pool, the water can be very cold – a proper cold plunge! Due to outside temperatures, it isn’t possible to get the heating up during this period.
-Pool Heating is Available (1st June – 15th September). Pool heating is available on request from 1st June to 15th September for an additional fee per booking.
