About this property

Old Cottage at the Atlantic coast near Sintra and Lisbon

Casa das Figueiras...

is a restored 18th century farmers cottage and is located within Cascais-Sintra Natural Reserve Park. Its original features have been preserved. A stay in the house enables you to feel and live the simple life of the last 200 years with some comforts of our times.

The surrounding fields may have grazing sheep and and goats.

The bedrooms are simple and comfortable. The second bedroom is quite low as it was in former times. The bathroom is in marble from the region.

You will also be able to use the garden around the house with pines, fig trees, palm, fruit and other kinds of trees, bushes and herbs and relax under the grape vine with view to the little village of São João das Lampas and the sea at the end of the valley leading to praia da Samarra, a little beach used as harbour by the romans. It can be reached by car or a hike.

The old still full functioning stone oven with the big fireplace, was also formerly used by the local community to bake the weekly bread.

In a perimeter of 40Km there are so many things to see and do that it is impossible to name them all. You may go for a day sailing trip along the Estoril coast, hike by the sea or the mountains, visit Sintra and Lisbon or simply relax in the garden or at the fireplace.

This house is especially suited for the ones who love the countryside and the seaside and who enjoy the simple life in an authentic old Portuguese cottage near to Lisbon and Sintra.

Rustic charm
Marco gave us the warmest and most informative welcome. Such an interesting ancient home, a good place to step back in time and relax. We also enjoyed having a garden to ourselves.

This property does not match the listing
While the owner of this property is very helpful and responsive, the property itself is in drastic need of maintenance. In its VRBO photos, the farmhouse appears to be in an open, sunny field. It is not. Based on the full-grown trees and shrubs that currently block the view, the photos in the listing are at least 10 years old. 1) It leaks when it rains. These are large puddles, not drips. The wood around the skylights is rotted and discolored from previous leaks. In several places, plaster was falling from the ceiling. 2) The main entryway is via a patio of large uneven paving stones. There is no outside light. We arrived in the dark and left in the dark, and it was extremely hard to avoid tripping. 3) There is a semicircular cut-out in the kitchen floor to allow the door to open. This unexpected drop in the floor is not marked in any way. We all tripped, and one of us was badly injured. 4) The second bedroom loft roof is so low that there is only a few square feet where you can stand upright. The railing is just a few pieces of thin wood. If this house is rented to families with children, a deadly fall could result. 5) The low entryway into the sitting room has a sharp stone edge that is not marked in any way. The owner remarked that a previous renter was hospitalized after walking into it. 6) The bathroom sink drain and shower overflow and the bathroom is infested with pillbugs. In its current state of disrepair, this property should not be on the rental market.

Stay in the old cottage
True to its name, this is a quirky old cottage that's charming and rustic. The grounds are really lovely and we enjoyed eating outside every day. There isn't anything within walking distance of the cottage but there are a lot of activities within a 20 min radius. There is a lidl really close by. Access was really easy and Marco was really helpful, giving us suggestions and recommendations for things to do in the area. Overall, we had a really nice trip.

Farmhouse full of character
We spent 6 nights in this home. It is both spacious and interesting. Marco the owner has retained the character of this 1700's home with loving attention to detail, and also made interesting additions such as a deep marble tub in the bathroom, which is a treat to use. The weather was unseasonably cool during our stay and we were able to use the large indoor fireplace and many candles provided. The outdoor area has lovely views toward to sea in the distance, with many pleasant seating areas among the varied plants and trees. The house itself is situated within a short drive of the nearest supermarket and amenities, and is in a good location for visiting the coast north of Lisbon, Sintra, Mafra, and even Evora (a 2h drive). Marco was one of the most responsive owners we have encountered and was beyond helpful when we lost our luggage, and responsive when we had a couple of minor issues with the house. Wifi is not stable (nor is 4G), so taking a book or other things to do is a good idea. Lovely place with loads of character!

A small oasis north of Lissabon
Best fit would be 2-3 people. The old farmhouse has lots of charm. There is no high-tec, no TV, (data and range) limited (but well working) WIFI. The garden with its trees and shades always offers a sweet spot for relaxation. Many beaches round the corner (10-20 min) and some nice restaurants too. Just 30 min to Lisbon and similar to the famous mountains near Sintra. From my PoV a real unique stay, worth its 5 stars

Peaceful Retreat
My girlfriend and I loved our stay here. It was everything we hoped for and more. The house is full of charm owing greatly to the timeless feel of the space. The large fireplace is great, the bathroom is wonderful and the bedroom with its windows looking out both sides to the garden feels really romantic. The garden is really special with so many beautiful plants and flowers carefully laid out by Marco and his family. Its really a very charming place and we would definitely go back.

Nice little cottage
We stayed with two adults in the cottage during Christmas 2018. Marco had warned us that the there is no central heating. We had to make a fire every night and every morning to keep the cottage warm. This was no problem for us, but is hard work if you are not used to making fires! We found the kitchen a little bit lacking in cooking facilities (there is a cooker with two gas hobs and a small oven) but made do with what there was. We used the fireplace a couple of times to bbq/ grill fish and meat, that was a lovely experience! The cottage is comfortable for two, but a bit small for more people unless you can spend time outside. In summer that is of course the way to go! There is a beautiful garden and no neighbours to be seen! The area is very convenient for daytrips, plenty of culture and nature. Marco is an excellent host and knows the area like his back pocket! We had a fabulous week in this area of Portugal!

Great place for our family vacation!
We loved this cottage and garden! It was in a great location for sightseeing in Sintra, beach-hopping, and exploring the coastline. Marco was the most generous host! He and his wife met us in Lisbon a few days before our stay and treated us to drinks at a top-of-a-parking-garage bar that had great views and that we never would have found on our own. He even helped us out with returning our rental car when the company opened after we needed to board our flight. His recommendations for local restaurants, day trips, and even Fado in Lisbon were top notch. The weather was cool at times, so we would often play games by the fire in the evenings. One day it was warm enough to eat outside under the arbor enjoying the great view. We are used to country living and always tidied up well, so while we had some ants we never had any rodents!
