Lone Bear Cabin: EV, River Access, Mountain Views, Fireplace, Hot Tub
A mountain view cabin on three private wooded acres near Luray, with Massanutten Mountain right outside the windows. Soak in the hot tub that seats 8, play pool in the basement, and stream or work on fast Starlink Wi-Fi. Luray Caverns and Skyline Drive are about 20 minutes away, and the neighborhood has its own access to the Shenandoah River. Dogs welcome. 3 bedrooms, 3 full baths, sleeps 6.
Bedrooms
Upstairs, the primary suite has a king bed, its own bathroom, a sitting room and a desk. The second upstairs bedroom also has a king bed, and the main level bedroom has a queen. The basement futon is in an open area, so it's best for a child or teen.
Bathrooms
Three full bathrooms: two with a tub and shower, and the primary suite's with a shower only.
Main floor
The open living and dining area has a gas fireplace, a smart TV and mountain views. We like breakfast at the kitchen table looking out at the mountain; it never gets old. The full kitchen has drip and Keurig coffee makers, and the washer and dryer are on the main level.
Basement
A pool table and game space, good for families and rainy days.
Outside
A 600 gallon Sundance Maxxus hot tub that seats 8, cleaned and serviced between stays. The deck has a propane grill, and there's a fire pit (bring firewood).
Work and charge
Starlink Wi-Fi, usually about 180 Mbps, handles streaming and video calls, though storms can slow it. The ChargePoint Level 2 EV charger (40 A, J1772 plug) works for Teslas with a J1772 adapter.
Dogs
Up to 2 dogs are welcome for $100 per stay, with no weight limit. Please add them to your booking. No cats; service animals are always welcome.
Good to know
The cabin sleeps 6, since the well and septic aren't licensed for more. Check in is 4 PM and checkout is 11 AM, since our cleaners need the five hours between stays. Early check in is sometimes possible when the night before is open, and we confirm by 5 PM the day before. No smoking or vaping inside. The filtered well water is drinkable, but bring bottled water if you're particular, and the cabin is on septic. Sheets and towels are provided, including large beach towels for the hot tub. Bears and deer live here too, so keep food out of your car and use the animal proof trash can.
The whole cabin and its three acres are yours, and no one else is there during your stay. South Fork Ranches has two private river access points for guests: one 0.9 miles away with parking, great for swimming, and one 1.2 miles away for drop off and pickup only. Six adult life jackets (size M) are at the cabin; bring child sizes if you need them.
Nearby
Shenandoah River State Park is about 13 minutes away: the Bear Bottom Loop and River Trail make a shaded 6.9 mile loop along the river, and a shorter 3.1 mile loop climbs to Cullers Overlook. Luray Caverns and the Thornton Gap entrance to Skyline Drive are about 20 minutes away, and the Front Royal entrance about 24. Castle Vineyards is about 11 minutes away.
Getting here
The last mile is a graded gravel road off US-340. Any car is fine in normal weather (we drive a 2007 Ford Focus), and AWD helps in heavy snow. Uber and Lyft don't serve the area, so book any rides ahead. Detailed directions with photos come after you book.
Lizzie and I reply quickly and send detailed directions and guides before you arrive. We have service companies on call nearby, so if anything isn't right, tell us and we'll get it fixed fast.
**IMPORTANT***
A note on the area info: Vrbo auto-generates the “area” and “what’s nearby” sections, including distances and nearby places, using AI, and some are inaccurate. For example, the river access is about a 20 minute walk from the house, not the shorter time shown. Please confirm any distance with us or in your maps app before booking.
