Old, Traditional, Charentaise House, Peaceful Vineyard Location

Hi and welcome to 'Woodsmoke'. This is a charming 3 bedroom old traditional 'Charentaise' house situated right in the middle of 'Pineau wine' vineyards and sunflowered fields. We are located 2km from the centre of the village of Saint Romain de Benet, near the busy market town of Saujon halfway between the coastal resort of Royan and the ancient Roman city of Saintes. We offer weekly breaks (length of stay negotiable outside high season). The house possesses two double bedrooms and one twin bedroom, two bathrooms, spacious traditional style fully-equipped kitchen, large lounge and dining-room. This is the perfect 'getaway from it all' in a 'home from home' location. Perfectly positioned to explore the stunning Atlantic white sandy beaches and islands, marshes, the wine regions of Cognac and Bordeaux among sunflower fields and Charente Maritime's numerous Romanesque and medieval villages and markets.

Great Private Property
Situated on the edge of a vineyard, the garden was large and private. Our 2 German shepherds loved running around the garden. Andy had secured the perimeter for us by installing a temporary fence. The house was as described and was exactly what we expected. 15 to 20 min drive to some lovely secluded beaches and close to supermarket in Saujon for everyday shopping. We cooked every night and found the kitchen was really well appointed. I didnt find that it was missing any equipment I required. The fridge and freezer were large and the oven was easy to use and very efficient. The booking process was made easy by Andy who telephoned me at home and we discussed all of the arrangements in that manner. Really happy with our stay and would book again.

Welcome to the Magic Garden
This is the main feature of this house which if weather permits will allow you to have everyday your three meals and your Happy Hour outside under the huge umbrella looking at a perfect colorful garden with the right mix of trees, bushes and flowers. Hear the birds singing, smell the various fragrances in the air and capture what nature has to offer. Inside it is very spacious but do not bring any elderly people with you for all bedrooms are upstairs and access is steep. The owner is very, very nice and helpful.

A delightful gite in a beautiful area of France.
Our group of four "oldies" were attracted to the Poitu-Charente region by its reputation for a warm climate and because it was not too hilly. The gite "Woodsmoke" was delightful and well-appointed. The garden with its shrubs and trees was perfect for sitting in the evening sunshine and enjoying the peace and quiet of Vouillac le Haute. It is within easy reach of a boulangerie selling excellent bread. Further afield but within easy reach by car are some interesting and attractive towns. Royan with its market and sea front restaurants was especially attractive . We all felt we had made an excellent choice of region and gite.

Lovely traditional French home
Old traditional French styled house but with every amenity and a real sense of charm in the furnishings. Andy was extremely helpful in contacting us prior to arriving and was always available for any questions. We would recommend this property for a relaxing holiday.

Homely gite in an excellent location
We had a lovely stay at Woodsmoke. The house is comfortable and well equipped and the surrounding area is beautiful. We were within easy driving distance from days out at La Palmyre zoo, La Rochelle and Royan and close to a supermarket and local shops. We would love to return for longer next time!

A character cottage in a peaceful region of France. Very comfortable and well equipped. Wifi a bonus
Everything was provided in this character cottage, the setting with vines at the back was perfect. We visited Royan and St George areas as much for the super cycle paths as much as the amazing beaches.

Lovely family holiday
We had a great holiday at this lovely house in very peaceful surroundings. Andy made the booking process very easy and was happy to be contacted if needed. The house was an ideal size for a family of five, all bedrooms were spacious, as was the lounge and kitchen. We enjoyed all of our meals outside but there would have been ample room in the dining kitchen. The large garden was great for the children to play in. We very much enjoyed the beaches in and around Royan which were perfect for young children and visits to Saintes (20 mins or so) and La Rochelle (1 hour).

Peace and Quiet
A lovely, well equipped house with everything you need for a family holiday. The hammock was very popular and the barbecue was put to good use. The house is in a very peaceful location but the bright lights (and supermarket) of Saujon are only a short drive away and the lovely beaches at Côte Sauvage and Grande Côte are easily reached. Andy was very helpful before and after our visit – including posting a toilet bag that had been left behind. Recommended for a family holiday away from the noise and kerfuffle of the modern world.

Lovely house in quiet village.
We found the house super. It was well equipped, with the kitchen having all you could need, and a garage with bikes, paddling pool, and tools should you need to do some car repairs. I loved the use of the bikes. Early morning cycles to the bakery for croissants were a pleasure. We ate outside in the lovely garden for every meal. We are a card and board game playing family, so the large table outside, huge sunshade, and room inside with circular table, were perfect for us. The weather was great. Who needs the Med? What to visit? The beach of the Cote Sauvage is a must. I think it is the most beautiful beach I have ever visited. Bike to the Abbey of Sablonceax, taking the GR path through the wood. Rochefort was great. The whole history of the place as a protected naval base many miles up river, the Royal Rope Factory, and to crown all the reconstruction of the 32 gun frigate l'Hermione. If you have ever read an age of sail naval novel you will be entranced. Your kids, and maybe you, will love the rope adventure area next to the frigate, built like a sailing ship. Greatly reccomended house in a great location. The house was a home from home, even if borrowed, meaning a real lived in place not a soulless apartment. Thanks Andy!
