Easy checkin, friendly staff. I stayed in the Chalet. It was cold but there were 2 heaters in the room, one looks like a fireplace! The shower was huge and there were 2 shower heads. Plates and utensils were provided. Quick response to text messages. About 5 min drive to entrance of Volcano National Park. The only thing is the walls are a bit thin, we could hear the couple staying in the room above us arguing and walking around.

Volcano Hale is a historic property offering basic or simple features for the modest traveler looking for adventure in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. As a basic, historic property, Volcano Hale is our only property offering shared bathroom and kitchen facilities. The property has a rustic, "dated" style true to its era. Although this style may not appeal to all travelers, we're happy to be of service to those travelers that own a travel style with an appreciation for simplicity, self-service, and shared areas. We do offer 2 other properties with a modern approach + PRIVATE BATHROOMS, appealing to mainstream travelers: Standard private accommodations at LOKAHI LODGE and Upscale private accommodations at CHALET KILAUEA. Upscale hostel
Pros:Comfortable bed. Quiet, though dehumidifier may have drowned out noise. Nice to be able to share info and stories w/ other travelers.
Cons:Electric hot water tea kettle would be nice. I heated water in a coffee maker.
Location:Of course, Volcanoes Nat. Park; lava tube, petroglyphs, wonderful crater rim hikes. Star Visitor Sanctuary (Kaimu Park near Kalapana) was interesting.
My room was cute, well-appointed, but low eaves. That room (303) not good not for super tall people, but only one like that, I think. Community kitchen and dining room very nice. Lack of private bath kind of a drag, but never had problem finding one available. An economical option for the area with some nice touches.

Nice spot!
Pros:Luxury in a natural setting.
Cons:Better shower heads for the double wide shower stall.
Location:Volcanoes National Park of course! Great thai food nearby. Head up to the end of Wright road to walk in an old growth Ohia forest too (Puu Makapala)
We were upgraded to a room with a King size bed and it felt like a penthouse suite. Nice high ceilings, warm and friendly decor, clean, spacious. Excellent overall. The shower was a bit weak but folks in this area generally have to use water catchment for home water use so it is expected that the pressure would be conservative.
This lodge is in a great location with lovely ohia forest surrounding and very close to the park entrance.
