Black Desert House ft in Architectural Digest
Summary:
Black Desert House by Homestead Modern is a globally recognized architectural retreat set among boulders in the private enclave of Rock Reach. Designed by Oller & Pejic Architecture, the home pairs bold modern geometry with raw desert surroundings, creating a rare stay defined by stillness, design, and horizon-wide views. From its infinity pool to its immersive glass walls, this is a stay for guests seeking beauty, privacy, and quiet awe.
The Space:
Perched above hundreds of protected desert acres, the home feels both remote and intentional, as if placed gently among the rocks. Clean architectural lines, curated interiors, and seamless indoorâoutdoor flow make the property feel less like a house and more like a private design sanctuary.

If you are into design and the high desert scenery you will love this house! An amazing private getaway. I would recommend and definitely go back⊠âïž
We had an inconvenience and the communication could not have been better, while the problem was not immediately solved they were very responsive and worked quickly to solve the problem. The house is amazing, we had a very relaxing time.
The scenery is breathtaking. The pool is the best designed pool for relaxing. The spa is incredible. Hiking around the property at first seemed daunting, but was actually very enjoyable. I am glued to my screens all the time, but here, I was quite content sitting in the gorgeous living room and staring at the scenery. We had everything we needed. We also managed to pick up some lovely ceramics from ZZIEE ceramics in Yucca Valley. Plenty of markets for everything nearby. You have to pick up some tacos at Kasa market! So delicious! Instructions and communication were perfect. We came to relax, slow down, and mission accomplished!
We enjoyed five nights at Black Desert House in late April and early May 2022. The location is gorgeous and private, the house is architecturally distinctive, and everything we needed was provided.
The dirt road to get to the house takes about 10 minutes to drive. Our Prius made it in and out many times without any damage, although a few times we did hear the bottom of the car scrape on dirt.
The oversize living room with entire walls of glass has some of the best views of any house we have ever rented. The bedrooms and bathrooms are smallish by comparison, especially for a house at this price point.
Unlike another reviewer, we loved the beds. They were the perfect firmness for us.
We paid to have the pool heated, and the temperature exceeded what we had been told to expect. However, the pool is too short for swimming back and forth, and too deep to splash around in without working to keep yourself afloat.
We love the desert and we love modern architecture, so this house was a natural fit for us.
This property is amazingly beautiful with stunning views of the desert. Everything that was listed in the ad was accurate with the following notes:
The drive up to the property is unpaved and a little like an off road adventure. Thank goodness for 4WD!
There are about 12 steps up to the front door with no rail. I mention it became I had a walking cast and it was a little challenging. Also the steps to the living room and in the pool were very steep and I could not go in the living room.
Everything is very beautiful and artistic. Its like a model home that's beautifully staged but not meant for relaxing. But we still enjoyed our stay very much.
Beautiful home and area. Everything listed is accurate. It is pretty deep off road which can cause problems for a sports car. Mattresses weren't the most comfortable. Everything else was amazing.
incredible architecture, stunning location, could use some umbrellas
the house itself was amazing. smaller than i thought it would be, based on the photos, but still so special, and the way it was situated on the property was perfection. those views, and so quiet! i will say, however, a few umbrellas around the pool would solve the two issues we had with the place: the first being that the bedrooms face east, so even with the blackout shades down, those rooms get bright and HOT by 8am, even with the AC running. secondly, had to pull the children out of the pool a few times to get them into some shade on the other side of the house. seems like a couple of sails could remedy both of those easily...
