Upon entrance, it is hard not to acknowledge the historic presence of the Hawthorne House vacation rental.  It was built in 1930 and the original structure has not changed since being built, and was updated with whole house air conditioning, wood plank vinyl flooring and checkered tiles throughout. The Hawthorne House was home to local Bend families for over 57 years until 1988.  It was sold and became the legendary graphic design studio of "Design of the Times" by Ed Carson or ERC as seen on several notable pieces of art in the historical home.  Ed created the world famous Deschutes Brewery artwork for the brewery and their amazing microbrews.  He also created the artwork and design for the Cascade Cycling Classic, the longest running elite road bicycling race in the U.S. (1980-2019).  Several original art pieces from Ed's creations reflecting these two world renown Bend local favorites are hanging proudly in this Bend historical house.

The home is older and although on the small side, it was easy to navigate throughout the house and the accommodations were thoughtful. Might suggest more USB ability in the bedrooms.
My husband and I were able to book a last minute Bend getaway and stayed in this home for 3 nights. It was absolutely PERFECT. The size was great for us (and we believe we could have easily fit our two young children), it was very clean, and the location was unbeatable to walk to everything from downtown Bend to spots like Crux.
The house is small, but didnât feel cramped for a family of four. The location is great for walkability to many of Bends restaurants and breweries. The only downside was there isnât any quality outdoor space at the house itself. Communication with the management company was smooth.
First and foremost the location is great. Really short walk to everywhere in downtown. The house is small but the kitchen is good size and the 2 bedrooms are nice.
On the down side the bathroom is tiny. The shower curtain hits you if you are using the toilet. The shower /bathtub was dirty when we arrived. It also didnât drain so we had to go to the store to get drain cleaner or stand in 2-3 inches of dirty water. My wife had to clean the bathtub and use the plunger on the shower just to get the water to drain. We had the same problem with the sink.
The photos are extremely deceptive. The nice fence masks the concrete parking spots right next to the patio which really isnât a patio at all. Just enough room to open the front door. I asked about a fenced area for dogs and was told they have one. However, they didnât stay it was a 3 x 8 concrete slabs wedged between the kitchen and the garage with as bbq taking up 1/2 the space.
Also worth noting that the entire house is surrounded by concrete parking lots. This house has literally no outdoor space other than 2 parking spots.
This little house was perfect for me and my adult son. It is a tiny house, but worked great for us. We had our own separate spaces, kitchen was big and definitely used the washer/dryer. The location is funky because it is exposed and right in the middle of a business district. Hard to find for delivery ppl. Otherwise, you can walk to a lot of places in town and a short drive to Old Mill district.
