A little history: The old faubourg of Chartrons is the historic stronghold of wine merchants. Its history is also marked by colonial trade. The most distant origins of the district, to which it owes its name, date back to the 14á” century when a community of Carthusian monks settled here. The great Flemish, Irish and English merchant families arrived here in the 17á” century. By the 18á”, the port of Lune was the most important in France. In the 19á” century, Bordeaux's wine-growing vocation was at its peak, and the district was home to the area's leading merchants. Neglected after the Second World War, the Chartrons district found a new lease of life at the dawn of the 21á” century: its handsome facades have now been restored, and its pleasant alleyways abound with antique shops, art galleries and home decoration stores. Facing the Garonne River, the former negociants whose wide porches once allowed barrels to pass through are now welcoming bistros and other restaurants.
