The fully furnished 100 m2 ground floor apartment sleeps two; choose to have the bedroom arranged with a pair of single beds or an enormous King, all properly outfitted with high quality mattresses, plump pillows and imported linens. Furnishings crafted of reclaimed lumber include a dry-box closet, nightstands, and overhead fans. Security screens afford plenty of airflow or may be shuttered to assure absolute privacy. We've done everything we can to guarantee a good night's sleep, but the Howler Monkey âalarm clockâ is beyond our control⊠take it up with them over your first cup of fine Costa Rican coffee enjoyed in the garden.
The downstairs kitchen includes range, toaster oven, refrigerator, blender, coffee maker, cookware and table settings allowing you to prepare your own meals. We'll stock some basic for your arrival then guide you in harvesting many of your ingredients from the gardens, shopping the weekly farmer's markets or haggling with the mobile vendors over local fruits and vegetable, fish, eggs and meat. Belly up to the breakfast bar for casual seating, dine at the hardwood table under ceiling fans, or head out to the pool deck for a gourmet picnic in the garden.
The ample seating area is furnished with artisan bamboo furniture. The 2 sofa and four oversized chairs provide cushioned seating in the wall-less room where the outside blends to inside. Under the wide eaves and overhead fans, this area is cool on even the warmest of days. Hammocks along the perimeter put you under-cover but virtually in the garden, a decadent way to spend the afternoon.
One of a kind bathroom features a sink carved from a tree trunk, evolving mosaic mural and a garden shower, all faucets deliver plumbed hot water. An assortment of bathroom essentials and quality towels are for home use and we provide sarongs for the beach. A jacuzzi sits undercover of a traditional thatch roof allowing you a soak among the beautiful gardens regardless of weather. The pool features a sandy pebble zero-entry, wet deck for sunning, and plunge depth. This has become a favorite place to watch the monkeys overhead.
The tree-level upstairs is an open floor plan, where you are at times eye-level to the howlers and sloths that frequent the property. The kitchen, dining and living area are surrounded by bannisters and open walls, like living on a big covered deck. The effect is amazing. Overhead fans throughout the space supplement the natural breezes.
Equipped with a full kitchen, oversized refrigerator/freezer, 6 burner stove, oven, double sink, prep island, microwave, toaster oven, blender and an abundance of quality cookware, the kitchen draws in helpers for the family style feast. A gas BBQ is available downstairs.

An ample quantity of dinnerware, in delightful bright fiesta colors set a table that makes any meal a party. Or gather the crew and play cards, board games or build a puzzle when you just want to sit up high and watch what might climb, crawl, creep, flitter, or buzz by as you gaze out through the trees to the garden below.
The living area features a large cushioned sofa and two oversized cushioned chairs, two rocking chairs and a hammock. Wifi throughout the house keeps you connected and able to post those selfies to jealous friends back home.
The Master bedroom features a king-sized bed and headboard crafted from reclaimed lumber designed to celebrate the Caribbean colors and philosophy of up-cycling. Overhead fan and secure screens create a restful night sleep. The ensuite bath includes a sink and toilet with the shower perched on a ledge extending off the back of the house. Generous plantings and screen afford modesty while providing a unique experience. An artistic mural depicting a beach scene created by a local artist covers the interior bath area, while a mosaic installation designed/installed by the owner covers the shower area.
The second Family bedroom suite is two distinct rooms. The bedroom includes a king-sized bed with a handcrafted headboard of live-edge wood designed by the homeowners. Utilizing the often-discarded pieces of fallen trees, the headboard stirs the imagination similar to seeing pictures in clouds. The family room also features a bunk bed with a double on the bottom and a twin on the top. The bunk, too, is crafted from reclaimed lumber and live-edge wood. Sleep well knowing you saved a tree!! The adjoining bathroom also features a sink and toilet within the house and a shower perched off the back. Here the theme is jungle with a waterfall scene depicting local Volio Falls, a favorite day trip for locals.
Extensive plantings and a frog pond provide habitat for many species of wildlife; keep tabs on Max the sloth and her expanding family who now occupy several trees on the property, catch the routine visits of the agoutis, and try your luck at nabbing the perfect photo of the magnificent blue morpho butterfly as it regularly weaves through the garden. Outdoor seating areas, swimming pool, hot tub, hammocks, and covered picnic tables immerse you in the tropical setting with hundreds of species of bromeliads, tillandsias and orchids. Heliconias, gingers and other flowering plants attract an endless rainbow of birds and butterflies. We take pride in the design of our home and garden spaces maximizing nature's paradise.
Owners, Janet & Nick, live about a mile away. Our gardener maintains the home, landscaping and pool as needed. Weâre all good at giving you your privacy while still being available should you need anything.
Our hosts were friendly and available. We had a few very minor issues and the hosts took care of them right away. Amazing place where you feel like you were living in the jungle. Beautiful scenery and wildlife all around.
It was really cute, but a bit run down. We were never met by the grounds keeper and it took us a few days to figure things out. We had to improvise with the dryer to switch propane to dry our clothes and we didnât find trash cans till 4 days in and I had to separate the garbage. Shower heads barely worked, screens for bugs werenât enclosed so we got bit up at sleep really bad. Thereâs a rope that goes over the pool and we got to watch the money climb and poop in the pool. Kinda funny, but we didnât swim. We liked the hot tub but the heat regulator didnât work so we had to adjust all day. Itâs just needs updating and a guide when you show up. Otherwise, itâs really beautiful. Great location and sweet.
The most perfect jungle home near the beach that we could have asked for! It was like staying a week in a beautiful tree house. We were constantly spotting birds, sloths, monkeys and bugs (the cool kind). The quiet location was perfect for our two families and we enjoyed walking to the beach and to delicious meals! Our hosts, Nick and Janet were very accommodating and welcoming and connected us to a wonderful guide
First off, the pictures do not do it justice. It is a tropical paradise with so many different species of birds, insects and animals. We were serenaded by howler monkeys on a regular basis, we saw many agoutis, heard multiple species of frogs and lizards. All of the rooms are gorgeous. The outdoor showers are great and the beds are extremely comfortable. The hammocks are a nice touch and they were used regularly. Thereâs a great selection of spices and things you will need to cook with. We cooked many meals here as the whole layout upstairs is great for entertaining as well as the kitchen downstairs that we did not even use. Thereâs three grocery stores that are within a half mile of the home. The beach is across the street. We found that Playa Chiquita was our favorite beach. There are several local tours you can do and I highly recommend the Ara tour with the great green macaws & the Jaguar rescue center. Communication with the owners is very quick for anything you might need. The pool was a perfect respite after a warm day of shopping and beaching. Thanks Janet & Nick.
Private in a quiet and safe area close to the quiet beach. This is a cool place and labor of love for the owners. It is open air with a great acreage to walk the trails at night and look for frogs and cool night insects. Heard howler monkeys, parrots, toucans, and the pool was perfect. Hammocks for lazing around and great facilities for cooking. If you are one of the people who insects love to bite you just may need to put a little bug dope on if they are out- they werenât bad when we were there and may not ever be. It is pretty dry. The community is small and so festive. Try eating at the local sodas for a delicious meal and the tours and kayak rentals are great. Sloths and monkeys- Caribbean beaches. This place is laid back and has it all in a quiet setting- not like the bigger places. The hosts were awesome. Donât miss this cool place.
It was just amazing. You are completely in nature! If you want and take your time, you can explore amazing things and have unforgettable experiences. You must accept the total exposure to nature because there are no windows, for example! Just grids and nets. So the ful sound is guaranteed!
Wow, where do I start?! My husband and 3 of our friends stayed at Anglers Lair for just shy of 3 weeks and it turned out to be an extraordinary experience in the jungle! We had red eyed tree frogs singing at night in the foliage around the frog pond, and then the howler monkeys waking us up at around 5am with their troupe âconversationsâ! Blue morpho butterflies weaving through the property in the morning, teasing me to try and capture a photo of them! Macaws flying overhead, with an occasional stop in some of the property trees. A young howler monkey scampering across the rope that is strung between two trees by the pool - as we watched in stunned disbelief from eye level of the open floor plan of the 2nd floor of the rental! And then as if to not be outdone, a sloth took that same trek along the rope a few days later! Agoutis foraging for roots. Golden orb spiders freaking us out on occasion when we forgot where their webs were! The poison dart frogs even made their presence known! The plant life around the property is just as varied and beautiful as the wildlife! We were certainly immersed in the jungle experience at the property! Oh, and our short hikes from the rental property down the trail to Playa Chiquita to bob in the surf surrounded by palm tree lined beachfront with a handful of other delighted beachgoers - what an incredibly beautiful and nearly secluded beach!!! Nice restaurants close by; wonderful hosts! Still smiling! Pura Vida!
The pictures are exactly as the property is. This place is amazing, we were able to see almost all the Costa Rican wildlife from the privacy of the decks. We even had a sloth just outside the gate. Janet is a great host with quick responses if we had any questions.
If you're looking for Western luxury, this might not be your place. But if you want a jungle adventure, it's truly amazing! It was gorgeous and beautifully blended with the nature around it. It was a little hot for me at times, but I made a lot of use of the small pool. I was pleasantly surprised that although we spent most of our time outdoors, we didn't notice many mosquitoes. And I was very comfortable sleeping at night with the fans. I really enjoyed the area and the beaches and activities like the Jaguar Rescue and tour of a chocolate farm. Oh, and if you're terrified of spiders, just be aware that there are a lot of big, harmless garden spiders. I found them kind of fun.
We all loved the property. The host was responsive and accommodating. Very relaxing location with tons of wildlife and close to the beach. No complaints!
Beautiful place in walking distance to Playa Chiquita
We had a great stay at Janetâs house. Very spacious, beautiful nature around, well equipped kitchen. Great pool area and friendly staff. Just really need be careful of the racoons - both nights they had a little dinner party and ate everything they could find that was not completely locked away :) We would have loved to stay longer
Although Janet wasn't always available due to connectivity issues, the property made up for this! What a unique place!!! So close to the beach and shopping. You really can immerse yourself in the culture of the Caribe Sur!
The house was just perfect for our family. It was great to have the space to sprawl out; even our own bathrooms. The open air kitchen and lounge spaces connected us to the surrounding jungle. The pool was an added bonus for my 5 year old granddaughter. She loved it! I think anyone wanting a jungle and beach vacation will be happy staying here!
Excellent communications with the management, well-stocked place that feels like home, not like a vacation rental. I would definitely return with the family. We played a lot of chess on the coffee table while it rained, and enjoyed the plunge pool and hot tub, clean and refreshing!
We had a wonderful time at Janet's Jungle house! If you are looking to experience the jungle in Costa Rica, this is the place for you. Janet was very helpful with transportation and information and was easy to communicate with. We loved the open concept of the house and picked it for that feature. Of course that comes with all that the jungle has to offer. It is a beautiful area and the people were very friendly. The beaches were amazing and pristine. I would definitely recommend for anyone looking to experience the CR jungle and all that Puerto Viejo has to offer.
I have been traveling in Costa Rica for the past 18 years and I believe this was one of my most favorite spots. I have always loved Puerto Viejo and this House is just the best. A perfect distance from town, beaches, markets and great restaurants. The yard it enchanted, we saw the most wildlife in the yard, waking to howler monkeys, mom & baby sloth. Blue Morphio butterflies, red eye tree frogs and more. The house is comfortable and well stocked with anything you could need.
Janet was amazing, easy to working with and very accommodating. I would love to spend more time here. We will be back!
We were booked to stay at the Anglers Lair for 3 weeks and could only stay 2 because of the call home in regards to the Covid 19 virus. The two weeks there were amazing. Save your money on the jungle tours, we saw all kinds of animals right in the yard! Toucans, howler monkeys (yes, we got the 4:30am wake up call! We didnât mind because it was so cool listening to them!) Two toed sloths, great green macaws, assorted frogs and lizards, agoutis, Morpho butterflies, lightning bugs and a three toed sloth that walked right through the yard to climb up the tree that is immediately outside the outdoor shower! The house had everything thing we needed. The hammocks were so relaxing and the pool was our favorite place, especially at the start of the trip when weâre were getting used to the heat. As far as the issue with bugs...yes there are bugs, big ones! Lol. But they are harmless and actually quite interesting to look at. There were no mosquitoes at all. I brought all sorts of bug spray and didnât even have to take it out There are nets above the beds but we did not need to use them. Janet and Nick were amazing hosts. If there were any questions or issues they were just a phone call away. Nick was gracious enough to take me and my friend for a tour to get us acquainted with the area as well as taking us to get a few groceries. There is a small store to pick up some items that is a 10 minute walk from the house. The beach , Playa Chiquita, was approximately 500 yards or 10 minute walk from door to sand. It was a beautiful beach with plenty of private areas where you could set up yourselves for the day. Location is great if you want to be a little ways away from Puerto Viejo. But itâs close enough to town that a quick cab, tuk tuk, bike ride or local bus ride is not an issue. You don't need a car rental but bikes would be handy getting around. There are a few restaurants very close by. Gypsea restaurant was very good. Ask if the have fresh lobster so that you can have their lobster Benedict. Yum and huge portion. Their coffee is amazing! Janet had booked us the rafting trip that picked us up at our hotel in San Jose and took us rafting down the Pacuare river for the day and then dropped us off at Anglers Lair that evening. I would definitely recommend this. What a perfect way to get to Anglers Lair at the start of your trip. (Or to get back to San Jose at the end of your trip) Thanks again Nick and Janet, we hope to see you again soon. Take care!
This is the most incredible house, but don't tell anyone
We absolutely loved our stay at Angler's Lair! My wife cried when we left. Nick and Janet were amazing with helpful hints, and locals to contact for our needs. This house is amazing! The description does not do the house or the property justice! Even the pictures do not fully tell how wonderful this property is. I almost don't want to elaborate because I feel it will be so popular that we won't get another booking. ;).
The House- it is a lot bigger than it appears in the photos. My rating of cleanliness is not a reflection on the quality of work, but on the overall building. There are so many nooks and crannies that it would be impossible to make the entire place spotless. We were not at all disappointed with the cleanliness. There are fans provided, and the sleeping areas were screened in, and very few bugs and critters got in. There were 4 of us, and not once did we feel cramped. There was lots of room. The beds were very comfortable too.
Kitchen was fully equipped. It even had a mango corer, a saviour during mango season. Fridge and stove were brand new.
Area- Playa Chiquita is an ex pat haven. Lots and lots of expats. There are ample restaurants. Be aware that the restaurants are geared towards expats, and charge accordingly. They charge in Colones, and if you aren't aware of the conversion, you may end up paying $100 for breakfast. There is a popular grocery store down the road (5 minute walk) that has everything you may need, including a gluten free shelf.
Beach- The beach is a magical walk away. All beaches are public in CR, so to get there, you walk down the road about 100m, then through a jungle trail to the beach. The most immediate beach has an undertow, so I would suggest walking to the right about 100m, to a more protected beach. There are some rocks at the point with some sandy tidal pools to hang out in. Just be aware of the undertow, it is there, and you do not want to get caught in it.
Overall, we will be back. We just got home, and are starting to plan our return.
Wildlife- As I have said on other reviews of houses in Costa Rica, don't go to Costa Rica, if you don't want to interact with wildlife. There are bugs in the house as in every house in CR. Big ones. But ones that won't hurt you. There are animals about. Agouti, Macaws, racoons, chameleons, and geckos to name a few. We saw monkeys on the tree beside the shower!
We cannot thank Janet and Nick enough. We will be back, sooner than later.
This tropical oasis is a must stay here on the beautiful Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. The host family was very generous to offer their home at an affordable rate with all of its amenities. I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this jungle retreat. The home itself is located smack dab in the middle of two bustling beach towns so there was a plethora of activities to do from kayaking, to hiking, to just relaxing out on the hammocks on the property. This âtree houseâ has a very homey vibe and is a great atmosphere for the entire family. You even have two pets that will visit you on the property if youâre missing your own animals back home! Delgato, the sweetest cast youâll ever meet, trust me even if you arenât a cat person you soon will after meeting him! As well as Zuri, a Rhodesian Ridgeback dog, who is obviously well adapted to the jungle life and as friendly as can be. Janet and Nick are both very knowledgeable about the area so donât hesitate to ask them about the best spots to spend your day! If youâre worried about bugs within the open concept of the house donât be! We slept in the upstairs rooms with all the doors open and did not receive any bug bites or see hardly any bugs, which was really unexpected. If youâre kind of ify about the sleeping arrangements Janet and Nick provided mosquito nets and plenty of fans to accommodate even the most pampered of guest (like myself). The wildlife you see on the property is as good as any tour Iâve been on within the country, and itâs all right outside your front door. You WILL see monkeys, iguanas, frogs, and a number of different species of birds. All around I highly recommend checking out Anglerâs Lair while youâre in Costa Rica you will not be disappointed.
Our family of 4, including to children under 10, loved this place, the adventure, the pool and hot tub, the proximity to beach and restaurants. It was excellent!
