Come spend a weekend or a week immersed in the Shenandoah foothills. This restored farmhouse sits on a quiet country road at the base of Old Rag Mountain in Shenandoah National Park and blends historic character with modern comfort. Many guests come to hike, but just as many come to slow down, cook together, enjoy the landscape, and spend meaningful time with family, friends, and dogs.
The home sits on approximately four acres and is surrounded by open land and mountain views. Multiple outdoor spaces invite you to enjoy the setting throughout the day, including a front porch, a screened porch, and a wraparound deck with outdoor dining. There is a Weber grill, a fire pit for evenings outside, and a hot tub overlooking the surrounding pastures and mountains. A smaller fenced area behind the house provides a safe place for dogs to run and relax.
Inside, the house is spacious, warm, and thoughtfully laid out. Original timber beams, an old log cabin section, and carefully chosen finishes give the home a sense of history without sacrificing comfort. The main level flows easily between gathering spaces, making it comfortable for shared meals, conversation, and quiet moments alike. A wood-burning stove is available for guest use and provides warmth and ambiance during cooler months. The original large fireplace in the adjacent family room is not currently in use but remains a beautiful architectural feature of the home.
The kitchen is a central part of the home and is set up for real cooking. It includes cast iron cookware, pots and steamers, non-stick pans, baking sheets, mixers, rolling pins, knives, graters, serving bowls, and storage containers. We also provide starter kitchen basics such as salt, pepper, a variety of spices, olive oil, vinegar, coffee, tea, and sugar. These supplies are intended to help you get started; quantities may vary depending on prior guests.
Upstairs are four bedrooms and two full bathrooms. Each bedroom has at least one window with mountain or pasture views and is arranged to give everyone a sense of space and privacy. Bathrooms are recently renovated and combine antique elements with modern fixtures.
This home is the second property in what we now call Old Rag Escapes, a small collection of thoughtfully cared-for homes designed to make time near Old Rag feel easy, comfortable, and memorable. If you are traveling with a larger group, we also have another home right next door that can be rented separately. Many families and friends choose to stay close together while still having their own space.
Dogs are welcome and should be included in your reservation. A $100 pet fee applies for one dog per stay. Up to three dogs may be accommodated for an additional $50 per dog, per stay.
Whether youâre here for hiking, reconnecting, celebrating, or simply enjoying the setting, this home is designed to feel like a place you truly settle into â not just a place to sleep.
