Get away from it all at Hidden River Cabin, a family retreat tucked away on 2.5 acres of quiet forest along the banks of the Betsie River. Here at the end of a private road and surrounded by the Betsie River State Game Refuge, you'll have 330 feet of natural river frontage and a private dock all to yourself.
The Betsie is a protected Natural River, which limits development and preserves natural beauty. It's shallow (averaging 2-4 feet deep) and gentle with a sandy bottom, making it great for big kids to play in and deep enough for leisurely trips in the provided tandem and single kayaks (two of each). The river will take you to the east end of Betsie Bay, Frankfort, and Elberta (roughly a two-hour float or a one-hour paddle), or all the way to Lake Michigan for the more ambitious paddlers.
For anglers, fall heralds the arrival of the king salmon run (starting as early as mid-August) with winter and spring bringing the steelhead trout. Use the portable fish-cleaning table and the grill/smoker to cook your catch for dinner, or take them to the Port City Smokehouse for the best smoked fish or pate you've ever had.
This home was seemingly designed for those who love to be outdoors. Enjoy a volleyball and badminton set, a bocce set, stomp rockets, and an outdoor firepit where you can roast s'mores nightly. Explore the forest, play in the river, or just curl up with a good book!
Hidden River Cabin is about five miles from the pristine beaches at Frankfort and Crystal Lake, and just 26 miles from Sleeping Bear Dunes. There's a family-size folding shade tent, lots of sand toys, and plenty of folding chairs that you can take along on your beach outings. Or, take out the provided bikes to explore the adjacent 22-mile Betsie Valley Trail, which connects Frankfort, Beulah, and Thompsonville, passing by some of the most beautiful scenery in the area.

Avis pour Riverfront cabin on the Betsie with private dock, kayaks & bikes - 2 dogs OK
Needs TLC. Screens missing and bent, bathroom spigot broken. Mice eating food. Shower curtains molding. Walk from cabin to river not as close as it seems in pics. No access to kayaks or shed supplied.
I waited a week before leaving this review to make sure that I wasnât being overly critical so here goesâŠI booked this stay a little late so there werenât too many other options. We had 10 adults stay. Me, my husband, my 4 sons and their girlfriends. This place is clearly unloved. The 2 that used the pull out couch, pulled out 2 empty chip bags and had to sleep in the crumpled unwashed sheets. No a/c and the windows needed to be propped open for air circulation. The window sills have dead flies in them and the back deck is filthy. I used the bathroom faucet upstairs and the handle fell off in the sink. There were towels but not for all 10 of us. There are curtain rods resting on rod brackets so when you try to open the windows, the curtains fall down. I get it, this isnât a 5 star hotel but not worth what we paid. Full capacity should only be 4 adults and 4 small kids.
Cabin was fine, exactly what youâd expect in a cabin. At the time we stayed, the property description was âRiverfront cabin on the Betsie with private dock, kayaks, and bikes.âWe never had access to the kayaks, bikes, or anything else listed in amenities and stored in the shed. I spent the first few mornings talking with Vacasa customer support trying to get access to the shed, but no one knew the correct lock box combination. Eventually we gave up. Customer service was friendly but terrible. The experience was immensely frustrating, and I feel like we were bamboozled. I will never stay in a Vacasa property again if it can be avoided.
The outside of the cabin is a bit rough but the inside is updated and fairly clean. It was a bit dusty and the white curtains had some stains. We were told in our check in instructions that there was a hot spot. Once we got there we were told there was no hot spot. So there was no internet at all, which wasnât end of the world. But it was an inconvenience at times. The upstairs queen bed was as hard as a rock. Very uncomfortable and my back still hurts. The shed door is rotted away on the bottom. We came out the second morning and there was garbage all over in front of the door. When we went into the shed it was full of garbage from past stays. An animal had gotten into the garbage. We didnât want to venture in any further into the shed to access the bikes or kayaks. Overall the property is ok.
Simple, no frills cabin in quiet wooded area. 15-30 minutes from most hiking/water activities but 1 hour from Leland to catch the ferry to South Manitou Island. Property did have bikes and kayaks available but we didn't have a chance to use them-- if interested in them make sure you get the combination to the storage shed as it wasn't provided up front. We had a few small issues with the property but the management company was pretty quick to respond.
