Great stay right in downtown Lufkin. The home is nicely remodeled—clean, updated, and very comfortable. The location is excellent, making it easy to get around and enjoy the area. Would definitely stay here again.
Kitchen cleanliness issues, hourly train blasts, and no refundWe chose this property because we needed a kitchen to prepare gluten-free meals for our daughter. Upon arrival, we found an older wire-burner stove and an oven with substantial built-up grease and grime. Terro ant bait stations were also located in the kitchen and throughout the house. We immediately reported the cleanliness issues and requested to leave the following day with a refund for the unused nights. The owner responded that it was summertime in Texas and ant poison should be expected. That night, freight trains passed directly behind the property approximately once an hour, with extremely loud horn blasts that repeatedly woke us. A wooden fence separates the property from the tracks, but it provided little protection from the noise. It reminded us of the Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage episode “The 6:10 to Lubbock”—funny on television, but not during a family vacation. The next morning, we found gray and pink residue on the shower curtain and heavy gray dust or discoloration around the ceiling vents, so we left.VRBO contacted the owner, but the owner declined to refund the unused nights. I considered returning after the property was cleaned, but the rest of my family was adamantly opposed due to the train noise. We were required to pay for 4 nights -which became a one-night stay—one of our worst rental experiences. Future guests should be aware of these issues before booking.
The house, location and the price were great. We had a slight change in our travel plans, and the owner was understanding and worked with us. We would stay again when in Lufkin.
