The greenest area of the city center, the Retiro neighborhood takes its name from the historic Retiro Park. Built in the 19th century, the park contains 125 hectares of trees, gardens, majestic fountains and historic buildings in the Romantic style, such as the fascinating Palacio de Cristal or Palacio de Velázquez, both of which are now exhibition halls. The park also hosts several cultural events, such as the Book Fair, the most important literary event in Spain. The Retiro district also has a very varied gastronomic offer, with renowned bars and restaurants where you can meet to enjoy fine wines with exquisitely prepared tapas.
