Convenient safe location
The modern apartment overlooked the delightful Alameda Central park. After a long day of sightseeing, we enjoyed sitting on the window seats and watching the families, buskers, roller-bladers, magicians, etc in the park. We felt very safe because of the 24 hr security. There were a few hiccups. There is a key fob that you need to have to get into the building in addition to the preset combination to get into the apartment itself. We didn't know about this & found it hanging on a wall hook. The light switches for the overhead lights were difficult to locate. We finally called the host & found out the switches were behind the pillows on 1 of the beds! We had a major problem our last evening when we were packing for leaving the next morning at 9am to go to the airport. The safe containing our passports & cash was jammed or otherwise could not be unlocked. After numerous unanswered calls & texts to the host & unsatisfactory communications with VRBO, I found a 24 hr locksmith who came (by this time it was 1:30 am) and was able to open the safe. Over the next few days there was back and forth discussion over reimbursement for the locksmith fee, but I was eventually reimbursed (minus a currency fee which was irritating, but oh well). The lessons learned here were (1) this owner was much more responsive to What's App & essentially non-responsive through the VRBO app; VRBO is not helpful if there is a problem. However, if the safe issue hadn't happened, we would give 5* all around.
