At Great Island Inn we offer modern apartments for the independent traveler in mind. Housed in a newly-renovated, 1820s home on New Castle island, our six guest studios feature fully equipped kitchens and in-room laundry. Whether you need a home base while visiting the Portsmouth area, are in town for an extended work trip, or are doing home renovations, we invite you to experience New Castle and the Seacoast like a local!

Great, but


JaMIe and I loved this vacation rental. It was very very clean. The check-in was simple. It was close to a cafĂ© with yummy pastries and great coffee. And it was just a short walk to a park on the shore with picnic tables, big shade trees, and a Sandy Beach. We only have two complaints but they are significant. There are six units at the great island inn and they allow dogs. We were greeted by barking each time we arrived in left. The other complaint is about the mattress. It’s not high-quality and made sleeping pretty uncomfortable. If those two things are cleaned up, this is the best rental we’ve ever stayed at. we felt lik

What a charming , and beautiful town. The room itself was very clean and beautifully decorated. We felt so safe walking the streets down to the water. Located close to a lot of food places just a short drive away. High recommend this place!

Comfortable, thoughtfully outfitted suite in a quiet, idyllic hidden gem community

The Great Island Inn is an awesome find for pet-loving travelers looking for a quiet getaway in a historic setting off the beaten path. The historic inn is beautifully updated with modern decor and appliances, comfy furniture and electronic conveniences. If you don’t want to bring in your own groceries (nearest grocer is 10-min drive), the unit was well stocked with necessities for a service fee. There’s a wonderful cafe next door that serves breakfast & lunch. Downtown Portsmouth is 10 mins away if you opt to leave the quiet solitude of the island. Easy parking, check in & check out. While in the area, we looked at other properties in the same portfolio in Rye (Rye Motor Inn) and downtown Portsmouth. They’re equally charming and also pet-friendly, but the Great Inn on New Castle is the real gem among gems in that group. We loved it and hope to spend time there again next year.

What a Great Inn!

We spent a long weekend in Portsmouth and stayed at the Great Island Inn. The Inn was very, very nice - clean, nicely furnished and appointed. Check-in/out was a breeze. The location was fantastic, a short drive to downtown and an easy walk to the ocean. We definitely enjoyed our stay and would return to The Great Island Inn without hesitation.
