Sitting in a peaceful position in the Ragusan countryside, Il Baglio della Sorgente is a lovingly converted winery and stables offering space, light-filled interiors, charm and extensive grounds. Inside: accommodation at Il Baglio della Sorgente is spread over the main house (an ex-winery) and some beautifully converted stables, situated just across the courtyard from the former. Both have been lovingly refurbished and feature high ceilings, airy atmospheres, clean geometric lines and a captivating mix of modern comforts, contemporary art and traditional Sicilian touches.

The entrance to the main house takes one into an open-plan living and dining area, furnished with comfy sofas and a large dining table. To one side, this space flows into a well-equipped kitchen-diner with access to an al fresco dining area and the surrounding terraces and gardens. An opening on the other side of the living and dining area takes one into a corridor, off which is a guest WC, a laundry area, and three double bedrooms, each with its own en-suite shower room and access to the external areas.

A staircase halfway along the corridor leads down to a second spacious living area opening out via a large glass door into the gardens. A curvaceous wrought iron staircase leads up to a mezzanine level, home to two double-twin bedrooms, both with en-suite shower rooms.

The main entrance of the converted stables leads one into a large, convivial open-concept space with a kitchen-diner and a living area. Large sliding glass doors open out onto the surrounding gardens. A corridor to one side of this space leads to three bedrooms: a double with en-suite shower room, and two double-twin bedrooms, one with en-suite shower room, one with a shower room opposite.

All three have doors opening out into the grounds. The fourth bedroom of the stables, a double with en-suite shower room and external access, is entered from near the dining area of the communal, open-plan space.

Outside: Il Baglio della Sorgente sits on a small hill surveying the surrounding countryside. Mature trees provide shade for a variety of al fresco sitting and dining area, while vivid green lawns verge on a large stone-flagged courtyard and a series of terraces, which the accommodation spills out onto.

Beautifully crafted, golden-hued dry stone walls, so characteristic of this area of Sicily, delimit the gardens. A private driveway leads down to the lovely pool area below, which is flanked by a fragrant citrus orchard.

Last but certainly not least are the extensive wooded grounds that fan out behind the property, perfect for a pre-prandial stroll or a touch of early morning exercise.

You may also wish to know that the pool has a single depth of 1.5m.

This property is surrounded by countryside, some of which is unfenced and may include drops or steep slopes. There are also terraces with low walls and drops within the property. We therefore recommend that younger children are supervised by an adult when exploring the grounds.

The villa caretaker, who lives on site, has two pet dogs that can usually be seen around the grounds. They are very well-behaved and generally loved by clients, however should you prefer, the caretaker will be happy to keep them in an enclosure near her living quarters during your stay.
Il Baglio della Sorgente sits in the southeast of Sicily, just a few kilometres inland from the long stretches of sandy beach that line the coast from Scoglitti down to Punta Secca and Marina di Ragusa (Montalbano country).

Inland, just an easy drive away is Ragusa, one of several stunning baroque towns, including Modica, Scicli and Noto, that form the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Val di Noto. A more off-the-beaten-track town worth visiting is Chiaramonte Gulfi, which sits in a superbly panoramic position in the hills to the northeast. One architectural curiosity in the area is the fantastical Castello di Donnafugata.

Slightly further afield, though still within easy day-trip distance, are the historic towns of Caltagirone, known for its ceramics and its baroque centre, and Syracuse, an ancient Greek town, once the mightiest city in Magna Graecia. The world famous UNESCO World Heritage of Villa Romana del Casale, in Piazza Armerina, is also an easy drive away.
