Lakeside Cottage, on Whisper Lake with Gorgeous Lake & Mountain Views.
This lakefront home is situated alongside tranquil Whisper Lake in the heart of Sapphire Valley. This spacious, 4 bedroom & 4 bathroom home has 2 living areas (upstairs & downstairs) each with a wrap-around deck and lake views from which can be heard the sound of running water. The upstairs has an expansive Great Room that features a gas fireplace and wall of windows overlooking the lake and mountains. The downstairs can function as a second living area and includes a living room with gas fireplace, access to the lower wrap-around deck and a game room with books, family board games, and a foosball table. All four bedrooms are roomy with good views and have access to a full bath. The fully stocked kitchen has a double wall oven. The outside garden has many flowers designed to attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Take a stroll down the pathway through the lush foliage where you'll find a private dock and canoe (available for your use). Good fishing for bluegills and bass on this peaceful lake (no motorized vehicles allowed). For a small fee, guests have access to the many Sapphire Valley Resort amenities (golf, tennis, indoor and outdoor pools, mini-golf, pool table, ping-pong, a fitness center and game room) and access to 55+ acre Fairfield Lake (swimming, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and motorized boating or sailing). Please ask for details. Holidays are a four (4) day minimum.
This house was awesome! It's enormous and could easily sleep 12. The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable and there was plenty of bedding and towels (beach towels would be a nice addition). The views are spectacular and it is serene and quiet. We loved using the canoe, foosball table and games. It has a nice kitchen and we cooked several meals and used the grill. It has plenty of pots, pans, utensils, plates, etc - my only wish was that it had more simple staples like oil & vinegar, spices, etc. I would definitely stay here again!
Evaluation of VRBO Property #1341898, Lakeside Cottage, Whisper Lake, Sapphire, NC
We have had five visits to the Highlands, Cashiers, and Sapphire area over the past 6 years, to all different houses. This was the first time we have been disappointed with the accommodations.
It was stated in previous evaluations that the parking was extremely limited. Only two cars can be parked without hanging out into the road. It is then 21 steps down from the parking area to the main level of the house. This was no fun with suitcases or tenants with orthopedic problems. The lighting at the top of the stairs did not function. That was a bit unsafe.
Our biggest objection had to do with the ventless fireplaces. I tried one the first day and the house was filled with propane fumes. Propane vapors are definitely toxic. It was a great disappointment to spend a week in the mountains without being able to use a fireplace.
Written instructions for the television would be helpful. Eddy, the property manager, had to go over this with us over the phone.
The upper deck was nice for sitting, but there were only two high Adirondack chairs. There was a wrought iron table and chairs. There is not much of a view of the lake, due to the trees. You are able to see the orange and yellow kayaks standing up at the community area across the lake. There were no comfortable chairs on the lower deck, only two of the wrought iron chairs. The advertisement photos showed Adirondack chairs down there. There was no view at all from the lower deck.
The housekeeping left a lot to be desired. There was mildew in the downstairs shower. I found a bunch of hair on the wall of it, when I took my first shower. When we plugged in cell phone chargers near the head of the bed, there was at least five years of dust and dirt. The middle level tub was wiped with a disposable Lysol wipe when we arrived. It came out black. The silverware drawer was dirty, containing dust, food, and hair. It had to be washed.
A Jacuzzi tub is downstairs. We couldnât figure out how to work it. There were no instructions for it. This is probably just as well, as who knows what would come out of the jets. The lights over that tub and in the bathroom closet werenât functioning.
The middle bathroom downstairs has a shallow tub, but no shower.
It has been mentioned about the difficulty in getting down to the lake. It is quite steep and involves going down under a tunnel of rhododendrons. The dock is smaller than a twin bed. There was only one aluminum paddle. The dock is close to a spillway over a dam.
Very nice and large home. We enjoyed the beautiful views, ample space, and comfortable furniture. We are a family of five and it was terrific to have a bedroom and private bath for Mom and Dad and each of our mostly adult children. We enjoyed using the canoe and the reasonably priced amenity cards. The fitness center was well equipped and our youngest son enjoyed the arcade at the rec center. Property is close to parks and trails and other recreational activities. Mattresses are very firm, but thatâs better than too soft. Propery could definitely accommodate a larger family, but we all liked having our own space. We cooked almost all of our meals in the kitchen. Itâs not fancy, but it had everything we needed.
This is a great rental cottage and location. There is not a lot of room for off-street parking at the cottage (maximum of 1-2 vehicles), and access to the front door from the off-street parking involves a fairly steep set of steps. Otherwise, very pleased.
We simply had a great experience. Jumped into the lake and used Inter tubes to just sit and let the current takes us down the lake. Canoed and tried our luck at fishing⊠no luck yet still great fun. We also went to several of the local waterfalls, the Farmers Market and Ingles of course. The community amenities were also great. We are ready to move to NC. Thanks for sharing your beautiful home with us!
Close to beautiful waterfalls, lakes and trails.
The area is beautiful and the cabin is cozy, yet very spacious.. for adults and children to play in their own areas. đ
Overall, this property is beautiful! Location is in keeping with all other vacation rentals in this area. The only complaint I have is...i was not aware that I needed to strip all the beds until I was walking out the door, as I donât think this was included in the rental agreement. I just happened to look in the book on the entry table as I was leaving and saw this. Great place, though. I would definitely recommend!

Lakeside retreat in North Carolina
The property manager was great to work with, but the property itself needs some love and attention. We could not access the lake from the property because the path was so overgrown and the stairs were not maintained well. The deck had green scum on it and there was mold on the sides of the house. A power wash and sealing would help a great deal. There are no cushions for the outside seating so donât plan to spend lots of time on the deck. Inside the house one of the toilets had a small leak and ran continuously. A light was out in the master bedroom and the vent to the Jenn Aire stove top did not work. A minor inconvenience in the kitchen is the lack of a garbage disposal. For people who love to create meals itâs a missing convenience. The house needs some love and attention before anyone else tries to stay there. The house is spacious but needs some care.
The starter package that is provided is generous and very helpful and the towels that are provided are fairly thick and absorb water.
In spite of the issues with the house we had a great time using the amenities package and visiting other lakes. Tennis, golf, pickleball and other adventures are all close by. We really enjoyed the area and found some great places to stay for future trips.
The house is very, very nice. It was clean and we had almost everything we needed. There was no iron. Someone took it, we figured. The steps down to the lake are a safety hazard. There should maybe be some rubber mats on the deck below the steps, as the wooden deck is slippery when it rains. One of us fell. The hot water in the house Is scalding. The property and the lake are very pretty.
Whisper lake provided remote retreat for our family during pandemic
The goal of our trip was to spend time together as a family and this rental provided a space for my husband and me and our three adult children. Everyone had room to spread out and there was ample space for all of us to eat dinner together, play board games, etc.
The home had all the necessities and was clean enough. Not to be too nit picky, but since we cooked in every night, the basic kitchen items were lacking and well, old. Could do with a spring cleaning of stuff in the kitchen and supply updated Items. These are definitely cast offs.
The view of the lake is the high point, but the overgrown brush all but obscured the view. A quick trim of trees would aid in providing a better view, as well as access to the lake.
One small upgrade suggestion would be to convert the tub only bath next to the room with the king size bed into a shower. This bathroom was unused by our family and we doubled up with my daughter to use the bath with the shower.
The location was perfect. Very central for a quick drive to cashiers, highlands and brevard. The path to the lake was like walking thru a hidden passage, which we all loved. We found the tree canopies beautiful and part of the overall experience, but I know other reviewers felt it was overgrown. We fished from the dock almost everyday and very much enjoyed our own private access to the lake, w a canoe that fit two adults and two children comfortably.
The mattresses are firm; some in our group loved that and others did not but overall we had a great time and hope to come back next year!
Perfect set up for our group with three levels of bedrooms.
Beautiful area, we hiked waterfalls and returned to kayak on Small peaceful Lake and grilling on deck. Parking is a bit of a challenge if you have 3 vehicles but we worked it out. Also lots of stairs so may not be suitable for some. Our family thoroughly enjoyed the property and our stay. BTW kudos on the well stocked kitchen and washer and dryer!
The house was perfect for our family with 4 bedrooms & 4 baths. The view of the lake was beautiful and sitting on the deck in the morning was very peaceful. The path down to the lake needs a lot of improvements as is was not easy to maneuver through the trees to the dock.
Overall is was a very enjoyable week and I would recommend this properity to other families.
My wife, and I wanted a nice getaway for a few days in the mountains. We came across this property and instantly fell in love with the pics and description of the lake cottage! The booking process was very simple and straight forward which I loved. We took our daughter and nephew up for 4 days earlier this month. This lake cottage couldnât have been more perfect and was exactly as advertised. It was actually even better and we loved our stay! Eddy McDonald who was our property manager was amazing! He was there to assist us with the any and everything we could have needed. The check in process was so simple we couldnât believe it. No running around to this office or that office for info and keys. A simple code received prior to arrival. Checking out was a breeze as well. The only downside is that we had to leave. We wanted our getaway to never end. We shall be returning!
