The third issue and the most inconvenient was the smoke alarm chirping in the middle of the night. All four of us were awakened at 1:45 A.M. by the chirping of a smoke alarm with a low battery. We found and could reach the wired alarm in the hallway and removed the battery. The alarm in the bedroom was indicating a low battery and the alarm was still beeping. But because it was on a high ceiling we could not reach it. We looked around the house for a ladder and could not find one. We checked the house book for a maintenance contact and found a phone number for Lucas who we called; and he told us that he has not been in contact with Sophia, the homeâs owner and host, in over two years. We then tried Sophia at the number in the home book and the number shown online in the VRBO listing. Both went to voice mail.We called the local fire department non-emergency number. They were at the house in under 15 minutes. They came in, evaluated the situation, then they brought in a ladder and batteries. The fire department told us that the smoke detectors were at their end of life and needed to be replaced. It was about 4:00 A.M. when the fire department left.
