Caldas de Monchique was a fashionable spa in the early 20s. Famous for it warm springs. Have lunch in the quiet square under tall shady trees. The region is well known for its medronho (brandy made from the fruit of the strawberry tree) & the scissor chair (wooden chair). There is a pleasant walk in the forest along a stream. En route to Caldas de Monchique visit the Foia peak (902m) the highest mountain in the Serra de Monchique & enjoy views of the entire Algarve coast on a clear day.
A peaceful and beautiful spot. Pleasant evenings under the stars. Great bird watching. 30 minute drive from some beautiful beaches. A well equipped villa.Jessica was friendly and attentive. My only complaint was that the air conditioning was not working in two of the bedrooms when we arrived - the engineer could not attend for four days and I had to wait at the villa to let him in.The other problem was ants - the only safe place to leave any food was in the fridge and they were getting in to the childrenâs beds.
We were 2 families staying for a 10 night holiday. The villa was clean, comfortable and very well equipped. The outdoor space was beautiful and the stunning view and peace and quiet was exactly what we all needed. Thank you to the villa owners and Jess the very helpful villa contact, we had a wonderful time here.

We stayed at the River house with our 2 families (including 5 children - 8 years and under) this July. We appreciated some of the extra touches - a welcome package with wine and snack and really appreciated that the owner supplied 3 lifejackets for our youngest children to keep them safe in the water. The property is very quiet, and set in a rural area. We enjoyed runs along the river, pretty view from the pool and the kids had fun playing on the deck and in the pool. It is a bit of a drive to get anywhere - but we did multiple local day trips that were fun (village of Alte, castle at Silves, beaches in several places). Some minor downsides were that the kitchen wasn't that well stocked for families (no tupperware to pack up lunches), no garbage bags that fit the bin, and no spare toilet paper! The beds were all singles pushed together, so the couples had to deal with not falling in "the crack"! We also had quite a lot of debris from the trees falling on the deck, so it took some sweeping to keep clear for the kids. We didn't see any water toys for the pool, but we picked some up easily. Lots of information provided re things to do and places to eat. Overall, it was a great place to stay with lots of space for the kids, and plenty of toys and games to keep them occupied. Air conditioning, security system and Wifi worked well.
