AN UNPARALLELED WINE ESTATE. THE ONE OF A KIND HANDCRAFTED STONE AND TIMBER HOME AND BEAUTIFUL NEW POOL AND SPA HAVE SWEEPING VINEYARD VIEWS.
The Haywood Vineyard’s handcrafted stone and timber Manor House sits atop a knoll, embracing vineyard views and sunsets. The Manor House offers visitors an intimate insight into the world of vineyard operations.
Completely private, yet a mere 1.5 miles from historic Sonoma Plaza, the location is incomparable. The Plaza, with expansive lawns and century old trees, is surrounded by historic buildings, restaurants, tasting rooms, and shops.
The one-of-a kind Manor House features four en-suite bedrooms: Two kings and two queens. Additional sleeping spaces include a twin room, a TV room with a queen sofa bed, and a window seat that serves as sleeping space for children. The king master suites are located both on first and second floors. A powder room is located on the first floor.
Arrival and Sense of Place
Trees canopy the scenic, serene country road that winds through vineyards to reach The Manor House. The artisan crafted home is built of stone carved from the Haywood Winery grounds and hand cut by Portuguese and Mexican masons on site. It is an integral part of the landscape and feels as though it has sprung from the earth. The expansive yet warm, intimate home commands sweeping views of Los Chamisal Vineyards. Grapevines grow from the valley floor up and around embracing hillsides. Oak studded hilltops frame views.
The Manor House Today and How it Came to Be
A building saga that spanned nearly three decades, the Manor House emerged as a state-of-the-art four bedroom, four and one half-bath home, with features that recall times past including a soaring two story stone fireplace in the living dining area, and cozy dining area in the professional well-equipped kitchen. Architect Ivan Poutiatinem, who oversaw the project, inspired the counter level kitchen fireplace, one of his signature features. Three steps up from the sunken living area, the first level includes a master suite, queen suite, television room, powder room and laundry room. The staircase, a masterpiece unto itself, features hand built quarter sawn vertical grain fir railing. The climb to the second floor reveals views of the home’s astounding stonework, woodwork, artwork and furnishings. On the top floor, you’ll find the primary, master suite, the double twin suite, the twin room, and the window seat.
The Manor House took form through the artisanal hands of craftsmen from Portugal, Mexico and Sonoma. The first mammoth stones, forming the basement and one half of its first floor, were chiseled and placed by the master Portuguese craftsman, Ferranco Viara. With his passing, the project was silenced for nearly twenty years. Often taken as the ruins of an old winery it served as a set for commercials and the movie, Walk in the Clouds, and has been traversed by such cinematic greats as the late Anthony Quinn and Keanu Reeves.
Building code restrictions changed over time disallowing traditional stone construction. The determined Haywoods spent two years convincing County officials that a home built entirely of stone could be not only be earthquake proof, but could surpass any current building standards. Massive timbers tie the house together and concrete support structures veneered with stone support two corners, giving it the strength of a fortress.
Peter and Maggie Haywood assembled a new crew of craftsman and in the year 2000 the house began to grow again. The second generation of stonework melds beautifully with the original. Masons crafted the remainder of the 4900 square foot home, the living area’s two-story fireplace and innovative touches throughout such as the Neptune fountain near the massive front door. Local builder, Todd Summers, crafted the front door, staircase, window seats and stunning woodwork throughout the Manor House.
Knotty alder floors flow throughout the rooms. Reclaimed wood ceilings supported by huge, heavy timbers, soar above living areas. Interior walls are formed of hard, color imbedded plaster with round corners, and bathrooms are graced with marble. The thickness of the stone walls keeps the house temperate year round. A sophisticated radiant heating system supplies natural heat in winter and a complex fan system draws access heat out through vents in the roof. Every room is furnished with quality, antiques, lovingly sought and collected by Maggie Haywood, during the second phase of building. The dining table and and an antique twin bedroom set are heirlooms from Peter's family.
Views of the vineyards, hillsides, and native oaks abound from every room. Slate patios invite guests to step out and enjoy the outdoors. The estate is more than quintessential wine country; it embodies the heart of the winemaking family and their commitment to quality in all aspects of their lives. They invite guests who wish to immerse themselves in wine country culture for three days or more, to entertain, family, friends, and business associates, and to make the Manor House their own for a truly special experience.
Pool and Spa
The recent completion of a beautiful new pool, spa and terrance overlooking the vineyards adds even more magic to the ambiance of this special estate. The quality of construction and design compliments the unique characteristics and quality of the home. A charge for heating the pool if desired will be determined by the temperature of the water and the cost of propane to heat. A fee of $100 per day will then be charged to keep the pool at temperature. A fee of $75 per day will be charged to heat the spa during winter, and $50 per day for shoulder and high seasons, approximately April through October. These fees are not included in the fee structure as they are variable and optional. Guests will be required to sign a pool and spa waiver.
