By far the worst experience I’ve had renting a house. We didn’t hear from the host until 4:30 PM on arrival day, and were told we couldn’t check in due to vague “safety reasons.” He assured us we could check in the next day. When we returned, the access code was wrong and took 30 minutes to fix. Once inside, we found only 3 bedrooms, though the original listing had advertised 4 (now changed). The host never responded to my messages. VRBO tried contacting him about the missing bedroom and washer/dryer, but he ignored them too. Two kitchen doors—one to the porch, one likely to the garage—were locked, and again, no response. We tried to leave, and VRBO helped us search for alternatives, but due to the Ryder Cup, nothing was available. We ended up in an overpriced, outdated hotel for the first night. The house exterior was unkempt, with garbage and weeds. Worst of all, it was directly under JFK’s flight path—jets flew overhead day and night. VRBO was helpful and supportive, but the host’s lack of cooperation made the situation unbearable.
