Not my favorite stay so far, yet not so bad. Starting with the "bad": The property is a recently renovated historical three story house, which has its charm, and its quirks. To my dismay, it wasn't very clean, mostly the stairs, as well as bedroom floors. Since I've lived in similar cities to Chicago, in similar homes, I know they're not easy to maintain, and this quality of cleanliness and repair is common. For me, at this stage in my life, I'm looking for super clean and well maintained homes, this wasn't the case for this house. As for the quirks, since it's a historic house, every step, and every sound made on any floor was heard in every room in the house, which made it hard to sleep and go back to sleep if someone was walking, using the bathroom, or kitchen, during the wee hours. Lastly, the management company was a mess. At the last moment, they told me my forms didn't go through in their system, which I've done weeks or months prior, and which then resulted in me calling the main national office, and waiting to hear from the local Chicago office, on the day of our arrival. I was very disappointed with their incompetence, and that brought stress to my family about the property. The "good": the property is in an excellent location. Safe, pretty, walkable, quaint, and the house isn't bed, rooms are fairly spacious, kitchen is nice for being in the heart of a city, and the main bedroom shower was pretty nice.
Pros: Great residential neighborhood near Lincoln Park and Old Town. Cons: First floor floor, open floor plan, was tile with no rugs. We were instructed to not wear shoes inside. The outside temps were in the 50s and 60s and the floor was freezing. No supermarket and limited food establishments in the area.
Fantastic property in a charming location. Perfect walking score with top notch restaurants! Home was spacious with everything you need for a relaxing stay. Will return without a doubt! Easy communication with quick responses.
Great, safe, quiet neighborhood. House was clean with comfy beds.
The living room furniture could use was updates, was not very comfortable. Possibily add a rug, the slate floor was cold, a rug may warm up the space.
Great stay with a couple of friends.
host is not honest and only a money grab. Looking for ways to get more money from tenant . very dishonest and very unjust people. Will never use this Host or property manager again.
Great neighborhood, quiet location, comfortable stay. Furniture was worn, but overall it was a nice stay. No extra towels in master. But overall, it was great. No issues.
We had a wonderful stay at this Old Town townhouse. We loved the location, several bedrooms, and the 3 separate floors gave my family plenty of space. A couple of things - the main room is quite a bit smaller than the picture makes it look. This was okay for a family of 3, but just something to keep in mind if traveling with a larger group. The listing also markets a roofdeck, however just know that you are unable to hang out there as this is just an emergency exit now. Most importantly, parking here is very challenging. This is a zoned neighborhood, and unless you have a parking sticker for the specific zone you are unable to park anywhere close to the townhouse. If staying here and if you need to park, I would anticipate using Spot Hero or finding a parking garage nearby. Overall, great stay & awesome location!
Here's why I think it's not up to the standard of a place rented for 6 people at that rate plus a cleaning fee:
- No big pot suitable for 6 people, just one little 2 quarts pot = they offered to bring one the next day
- Bathroom not clean thoroughly (toilets floor, hair in drawers)
- No clean sponge on arrival (used one, wet)
- Dishwasher not unloaded and many items not properly cleaned - dishwasher looks like it has an issue considering how bad the washing is
- Upstairs bathroom caulk has mold
- Mattress in one of bedroom bends deep in the middle, clearly needs replacement
- HVAC vents/grid full of dust
I would ask at the minimum to be reimbursed the cleaning fee considered the place was not clean upon arrival. Other items are more for you to improve/maintain the place if you're looking for positive reviews.
I sent 3 emails to their "concierge" address explaining these issues with pictures, I did not get any answer (only got one answer about the missing pot, but nothing after).
But yeah, the place itself is great and location awesome.
Great location, very safe and close to the lakeshore. Check-in and entry and was easy and as described. I've stayed at a few pet friendly rentals, and this one was far better than most - I would rate it near the top. There are couple of issues that could make this a 5-star listing. The master bed was very comfortable, the beds on 2nd floor are not. The "bike room" bed has a noticeable sag in the mattress that rolls you into the middle of the bed - it's not comfortable. The other 2nd floor bed is not as bad, but not good. Communications is not smooth (there are 3 entities VRBO, Red Awning, the owner - I think). Example: From the outset, I searched for places that accepted pets. At every point in the process, I listed 4 adult and a pet, so I was surprised that after I locked in and paid, I was told "we'll check and see if your pet will be allowed"...what? Then they came back with a $400+ fee. If they "catch" you with an undeclared pet, it's $500. Not much of a price difference for being upfront and honest from the start. Parking was fine for me because the weather was very nice...but if it's raining, cold or other poor weather, parking will be very inconvenient. Guest parking pass could fix this. There is some free parking near the St Michaels, it's not mentioned in the checkin and i had to figure it out myself. The header on VRBO say "large condo with outdoor deck" but the door leading to the deck has signs that say "private - emergency exit only" confusing.
We were in Chicago for a weekend reunion with friends. This rental worked perfectly for us. The location was convenient (we used Curb to get around). There is the living room/kitchen/dining room/bathroom on ground floor, 2 bedrooms and a bath on 2nd floor, and a master bedroom and bath on the third floor. You do need to use stairs. The area felt safe. It was my first VRBO rental. To communicate you go through VRBO to Red Awning to the local property manager. All worked out fine-just know that there are levels of communication. I would certainly stay here again. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
Lots of places within walking distance to eat, shop and visit. The inside of the house is very nicely done, and all room are well equipped with utensils. Oddly enough, there was no can opener in the kitchen, but we managed to get by without that. Communication with the host/owner seems to go through a different company so it didn't feel like our messages were getting through. But, thankfully we didn't have any problems so that didn't create much of an issue. Checkin was very easy, although it would have been nice to be able to check in a little early.
