Discover the Hidden Gems of the Great Smoky Mountains
Step off the beaten track and into the heart of the Smokies on this unforgettable guided tour through some of the region’s most fascinating and lesser-known areas. This immersive experience offers a little bit of everything—breathtaking scenery, local history, charming towns, unique shopping, delicious dining, and captivating stories that bring the Great Smoky Mountains to life.
Your adventure begins in the heart of the Smokies, where you’ll board a comfortable tour bus and head to the enchanting city of Gatlinburg. As you explore, you’ll uncover the city's rich heritage, learn about its pioneering families, and see how this once-quiet mountain town blossomed into one of the area’s most beloved destinations.
From Gatlinburg, the journey continues to the Rockefeller Memorial at the top of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park—a place of deep significance and awe-inspiring beauty. Here you get 30 minutes to take in the views and smells of the mountain top. There's even a bathroom in case you need it.
After leaving the mountain top we had down into the park following Little River as we make our way past areas like Elkmont and Metcalf Bottoms learning about historic figures like Uncle Lem and the Walker family. Enjoy the views along the way as your guide tells you all about the history and heritage of the Smoky Mountains and its people.
Next, travel through Townsend, affectionately known as “the peaceful side of the Smokies.” This quiet town, once a thriving logging community, offers a look into the past with places like the Dark Island Swinging Bridge and the Little River railway Museum, where a beautifully restored Shay locomotive from the early 1900s stands as a tribute to the area's industrial roots. You'll also learn a bit about the Heritage museum and other local attractions worth a visit while you are in the area. We make a stop in Townsend for our 1 hour lunch break to have a meal and do some shopping. (Food not included)
The journey continues into Walland and up the Foothills Parkway, offering sweeping, panoramic views of the Smokies’ tallest peaks. For those eager to stretch their legs, an optional scenic hike awaits. Before heading back, stop at the delightful Apple Valley Country Store—perfect for picking up a few Appalachian treasures or grabbing a snack.
On the return trip, relax as you watch Exploring the Smokies, an engaging DVD that complements your journey with visuals and stories, while your guide shares even more fun facts, folklore, and insider tips.
Whether you're a first-time visitor or a returning traveller, this tour promises an enriching and memorable experience that celebrates the spirit and splendour of the Great Smoky Mountains.
