Description

Take an activity-packed day trip from Hobart that showcases the best of the Tasman Peninsula.

Depart Hobart in the early morning to start your Port Arthur day trip with the drive to the stunning Tasman Peninsula, home to Australia’s highest sea cliffs.

Enjoy panoramic views of the area from Pirates Bay Lookout; see the interesting Tasman Arch and Devils Kitchen rock formations; and take a short but spectacular walk along one of Tasmania’s 'Great Short Walks,' the Waterfall Bay cliff-top track. From here, head to Port Arthur Historic Site, where you have about four hours to explore. Your entry includes a harbour cruise around Isle of the Dead and a guided walking tour with one of the site’s expert guides.

Try to imagine the sense of isolation experienced by the convicts who once inhabited this 'inescapable prison,' and discover the grim and violent history of the early Australian penal system. Walk through the main prison and see the solitary confinement cells and other buildings in this open-air museum and World Heritage site.

The return drive to Hobart takes you into the historical township of Richmond, where you have a bit of time to walk around and cross Australia’s oldest bridge still in use—a convict-built sandstone bridge reported to be haunted. Last but not least, before re-entering Hobart, stop for a view of the city from a local lookout point.

Very informative and the best spot to learn about the unique history. For summer season, I suggest that the tour describes that Port Arthur is an open field and we will be exposed to the extreme sun light. This way we can bring a hat and a parasol. If the tour included a lunch hour at a restaurant, it would be a nice and fulfilling local experience. This, if the timings of other activities can accommodate. Guide was very friendly and led us through the nice bush walk with splendid view at many spots that opened in the bush. I would love information about vegetation and more during the drive, too! Definately recommend to others. Thank you.

David was a wonderful tour guide. He shared a lot of interesting local knowledge. We really enjoyed our tour through part of the coastline, Port Arthur and especially the stop at Federation Chocolates (yummy). The last stop to see the night lights of Hobart was a great end to a wonderful trip. Thanks David.
