Former Majestic Hotel, it is a historic building and a cultural centre of the Capital, one of the largest and best equipped in Brazil. The Majestic Hotel had its peak in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. During this period, guests with great names from politics, such as ex-presidents Getúlio Vargas and João Goulart, and from the artistic world, such as Vicente Celestino, Virginia Lane and Francisco Alves. As a result of the so-called “developmentalist” period, the hotel began to suffer competition from new hotels that had wider and more modern facilities. The former guests were gradually replaced by “cath” and wrestling fighters, as well as singles, widowers, bohemians and lonely poets like Mário Quintana, who stayed there from 1968 to 1980, in apartment 217. The House was named in his honour, one of the greatest Brazilian poets, Mário Quintana, born in the city of Alegrete in Rio Grande do Sul, but who adopted Porto Alegre as his city of heart.
