What you can expect

Discover the rich history of the beachside town of Sitges with a self-guided tour. Famous for its counterculture, the town has been enjoyed since Roman times. More recently, it became a hub for the Catalan Modernists, including the beloved architect Antoni Gaudi, and a popular LGTBQIA+ destination.
Starting at the boardwalk, the tour will take you back to Roman times, when soldiers would visit the beachside town to rest and recover. Making your way through the Old Town, the tour will pass buildings from the 1400s that still line Sitges’ oldest street.
Next, learn about the town’s strong ties to art and counterculture. Hear stories about the painter Santiago Rusiñol, whose hedonistic lifestyle and involvement with the Catalan Modernists gave Sitges its liberal reputation.
Passing by the Museu del Cau Ferrat and the Palau de Maricel, you’ll have the option to explore Sitges’ artistic heritage in more detail. The tour will continue past the Church of St Bartholomew and Saint Tecla, the town’s most photographed site, and on to El Chiringuito, Spain’s first beach bar.
As you walk, learn how Facundo Bacardi Masso, of Bacardi Rum fame and a Sitgetan, invented the first white rum in the world. At your own pace, discover the influence the town’s history has on modern Sitges, from its buildings, to its people, and its culture.
