What you can expect

Embark on a journey to one of Chiapas' most spectacular natural attractions—the imposing Sumidero Canyon. Marvel at the towering canyon walls on a scenic cruise down the Grijalva River, and then take a walk through the colonial town of Chiapa de Corzo.

Set out from San Cristobal and travel to the picturesque Chiapa de Corzo, the first Spanish city founded in Chiapas during the 16th century. Take a seat in a small motorboat for a ride on the Grijalva River, which carries you past crocodiles, exotic birds, and perhaps even monkeys into the verdant Sumidero Canyon.

As you pass between the canyon's 3,000-foot (1,000-m) walls, gaze up at their soaring grandeur that promises to take your breath away. After navigating through this natural masterpiece, catch sights of the Presa Chicoasén hydroelectric plant constructed at the other end.

Back in Chiapa de Corzo, take a walk around the central square, which retains the 16th-century architecture of the Spanish colonial period. Visit the well-preserved Santo Domingo church, and admire the Moorish style of the diamond-shaped La Pila fountain, before returning to San Cristobal.
