Approaching the property felt like stepping onto the set of Rising Damp, and not in a charming way. The communal stairs featured a worn green carpet, a lingering musty smell, and lighting that seemed to have given up decades ago. First impressions matter. This one certainly made one. Things didnât improve much on arrival. One of the front door keys refused to work, meaning the door couldnât be properly locked â not the most reassuring start. The apartment itself was clean and matched the photos, although basics like toilet paper were mysteriously absent. Clothes storage turned out to be the utility cupboard â creative, if not entirely practical, but I could have lived with that. What I could not live with was the bed. The mattress felt like it had declared war on my spine. Springs jabbed with military precision, and after one hour my wife surrendered to the sofa (too short for her), while I battled through the night. I had booked five nights for work, but after night one I made an emergency move to a hotel at 5am, partly for sleep, partly to preserve marital harmony. To be fair, the hosts were polite and communicative, offering a mattress topper due three days later, unfortunately too late to help. Other curiosities included a smoke detector covered with a plastic bag and notice that estate agents would be viewing during the stay. On a genuinely positive note, VRBO were outstanding â professional, responsive, and supportive throughout.
After being told 24 hours prior to our arrival that we would have to walk 10 minutes, lugging suitcases, to a store to retrieve our keys, I finally got the building only to find the keys did not work. Getting a hold of the hosts was not easy. When I finally got through to the property manager, they told me to walk back to store and get another key. I complained but they persisted as it was the only way to get new keys. BTW I was hot and exhausted from a long day of travel. My wife had to wait outside the property with the suitcases for me to return. The building was in disrepair and filthy. The hallway was disgusting and filthy. That was just the beginning of this terrible stay. There was no information on WiFi, except through online, Which is ridiculous as I needed the WiFi to get online. The flat was fair and would have gotten 3 stars if not for the all of the issues. However, it too was dirty and in disrepair. Also it was a very narrow two story walk-up that was not indicated on the listing. They told me they would give me 50% off for one night for my inconvenience. I argued that it was not sufficient considering how bad the property was and how dirty it was. I asked for at least 50% of the total stay refunded. We will see if they comply! I am not going to provide you with all of the detail issues, but there were many.
